This banner on Main Street in the center of Mt. Jewett welcomes visitors to the 40th Swedish Festival to be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The festival pays tribute to the Swedish heritage in Mt. Jewett.

Route 6 repairs under way

Repairs are under way for a badly deteriorated section of the eastbound lane of state Route 6 between an area just east of the Colonial Inn in Hamilton Township and east of Kane Lawn and Garden in Wetmore Township. IA Construction of Franklin is the contractor for the project. One-lane traffic is maintained through the construction site with flagmen on both ends of the work area.

Dr. Maryann Anderson (left), superintendent of the Kane Area School District, and Natalie Miller-Martini (right), principal for curriculum, look over results of state tests given earlier this year. Based on the results, the school district as a whole, the middle school and the high school will retain "Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)" status. The elementary school, however, will drop to "warning" status because a subgroup for special education students failed to achieve its goal.

Swedish Festival Queen candidates

Cassandra Henderson (left) and Ashley Swanson (right) are candidates for the Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival Queen. Melanie Geer (center), the 15-year-old daughter of Sue and Steve Geer, is the 2009 festival queen. Cassandra, 13, is the daughter of Christine and Mike Henderson. Ashley, 12, is the daughter of Missy and Jeff Swanson. The crowning of the queen takes place at the closing ceremony at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Center Street stage.
