Members of the Kane Garden Club met to finalize their plans for the upcoming tour of five local gardens and the formal tea to be held at a historical landmark – The Kane Manor. Ticket holders may come to tea anytime between one and 4 p.m. at The Kane Manor located at 230 Clay St. Those who wish to purchase tickets may contact Jeannie Iannuzzi Mary Jo Wojcik or Janet Bard.
The gardens to be featured are at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. James Iannuzzi, Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Farnsworth, Mr. and Mrs. James Kane, Mr. and Mrs. Charles "skys" Lyle, and Mr. and Mrs. David Conklin. Ticket holders are also welcome to visit the Kane Manor's beautiful surroundings including the unoccupied bedrooms.
During the business meeting members were reminded of a return trip to Lillies of Field in Northeast. We will meet at the parking lot of the Baptist church to carpool. Members and guests are carpooling. Lunch will be in Corry and the visit to the lily gardens will be at 2 p.m.
Christian LeBrie plans to move a large wooden planter to the Steve Jerman Memorial on Route 665 near Kane. Christian asked for the garden club's help to plant suitable perennials. Judith Lyle, president suggested we plant bulbs in the fall Bulb Blast at the October meeting.
Beverly Nix gave a report on how birds adapt to temperature extremes. Doris Holt spoke about the camouflage choices butterflies make. The butterflies often choose the same color that the butterfly is when they are seeking nectar.
In September the District VIII meeting will be in Edinboro. This is usually an excellent meeting and a chance to find out what other garden clubs are doing.
Reports were also given on our many civic beautification projects. With the help of all those who support our fundraisers; the recent plant and soon to be garden tour and tea. We appreciate the help and support of the public and the gardeners who will graciously share the beauty of their gardens. The proceeds support the Soldiers Memorial the Uptown Planters (the geraniums were donated by Mr. and Mrs. Temeshenko at Wuick Fill on Biddle St. Other civic beautification projects are the Lutheran Home plantings, the Memorial plantings near the point at Evergreen Park, the daffodil plantings in the fall, the Children's plot on Fraley St. and the Depot Flower Boxes and Barrels and the Florence Newcomer Memorial. (Florence Newcomer started the Kane Garden Club.) Caroline Carson reminded members to remove dead blooms on geraniums and petunias – otherwise they quit producing new flowers.
Linda Caldwell of the conservation committee spoke about water reuse. Consider gathering water in a rain barrel using gray water from dishwashing or bathing and dehumidifiers. And use mulch and fiber-cloth to slow evaporation.
Our picnic will be Thursday, August 19 at the East Kane Pavilion. The serving committee will bring the dessert. Members are reminded to bring a tureen to share their table serve and beverage.
Refreshments were served from a beautiful table which featured a large white – gray ped – estal bowl with a large arrangement of white hydrangea, spikes of variegated leaves and gorgeous fuschia phlox from Loula Bechakas' gardens. Judi Lyle provided six teapots and Jan Baker gave each a different arrangement including orange lilies, pink sweet-peas, strawberry geraniums, white daisies, black-eyed susans, and red monards with silver gray artemisia. Beverly Nix poured and lemon dessert along with nuts and dried fruits were enjoyed by all, along with much lively conversation. Lois Wilson provided a door prize and Judy cox also served on the refreshments committee.
