MT. JEWETT – A large crowd gathered Monday evening at the Mt. Jewett Fire Hall for the annual Halloween Costume Contest.
Prizes were awarded for first, second and third in nine categories.
The Mt. Jewett Rotary Club sponsored the contest. Rotary also sponsored the Halloween parade prior to the contest. "Trick or Treat" time followed the contest.
Judges for the contest included Lea Earley, a Mt. Jewett resident who is the reigning Miss Kane High; Barb Harp, borough secretary-treasurer; and Christine Park, secretary-treasurer for the borough water department.
Gertrude C. Sleeman, 92, of 701 Rouse Ave., Youngsville, and formerly of Clarendon, passed away on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 at the Rouse Home.

George Preston Simon Jr., 92, a former resident of Perry County for 35 years and currently of Chapel Pointe, Carlisle, died on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011 in the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
He was born April 14, 1919 in Mt. Jewett, to the late George P. and Bertha Rathburn Simon.
Janis M. Sample, 53, of 148 School St., Kane, and formerly of Wilcox, died on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 at Kane Community Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born on August 19, 1958 in Ridgway, daughter of Thomas J. and Dorothy Dush Redmond.
She married Jeffrey A. Sample on May 14, 1982. He survives.
She resided in Kane for the last 22 years. She graduated from Johnsonburg Area High School, Class of 1976 and from Median Technical School of Pittsburgh as an Animal Health Tech. She was employed by Kinzua Veterinary Clinic in Warren for 10 years.
