Richard L. “Dick” Clevenger Sr.

Richard L. “Dick” Clevenger Sr. of James City, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at Kane Community Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Aug. 17, 1938, in Fisher, he was a son of Benjamin and Dorothy Rhodes Clevenger.
Mr. Clevenger served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960. Later in Life, he joined the Army National Guard and served with the Kane Unit for 20 years. During that time they were deployed for service in support of Operation Desert Storm in Iraq.

4 seek 3 seats as county commissioners

SMETHPORT – There are four candidates in Tuesday's election for three seats on the McKean County Board of Commissioners.
Incumbents who are seeking re-election include Republican Joe DeMott of Port Allegany, Republican Al Pingie of Bradford Township and Democrat Judy Church of Smethport. The challenger is Democrat Cliff Lane of Annin Township, a former county commissioner.
Voters will be asked to cast ballots for two of the four candidates. The top three vote-getters will comprise the new county Board of Commissioners.

Richard L. Clevenger Sr., 73, of New Jersey Ave., James City, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 at Kane Community Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc.

Eagles Club makes donations to Kane Food Pantry

The motto for the Kane Eagles Club is “people helping people.”
The club at Chase and Bayard streets is doing just that.
The Eagles Club again is donating numerous canned goods and packaged grocery items to the Kane Food Pantry. The club also has presented the pantry with a check for $500.
Barb Gadley-Cheeks, secretary of the Eagles, said the club last year held a dance to benefit the Food Pantry. For admission to the dance, members and guests brought cans and packages of food, she said.

2 seek election as Kane District Court judge

Dave Engman of Kane won the Democratic and Republican nomination for Kane District Court judge in the May primary and is the only candidate lisedt on the ballot for the election next Tuesday.
However, Kane Borough Police Chief Brian Hillard recently announced that he is challenging Engman as a write-in candidate.
The two candidates are seeking the position formerly held by Michael Kennedy, who retired for health reasons last year and died earlier this month. Michael Fedora has been serving as acting district judge for more than a year.

Kane Elementary School has new reading program

No reading textbook to carry home from school every day?
That’s right.
Under a new reading program at the Kane Elementary School, students can “read anything they want” when they go home as long as they read, Principal Linda Lorenzo said.
She said the students are directed to read books, magazines or newspapers for “at least 20 minutes” at home each day after school. When they’re finished reading, students are expected to discuss what they’ve read with a parent or an older sibling.

Gertrude C. Frey Sleeman, 92, of Youngsville, and formerly a resident of Clarendon, passed away on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 at the Rouse Warren County Home.

Prizes given in Mt. Jewett Halloween Costume Contest

MT. JEWETT – A large crowd gathered Monday evening at the Mt. Jewett Fire Hall for the annual Halloween Costume Contest.
Prizes were awarded for first, second and third in nine categories.
The Mt. Jewett Rotary Club sponsored the contest. Rotary also sponsored the Halloween parade prior to the contest. "Trick or Treat" time followed the contest.
Judges for the contest included Lea Earley, a Mt. Jewett resident who is the reigning Miss Kane High; Barb Harp, borough secretary-treasurer; and Christine Park, secretary-treasurer for the borough water department.

Gertrude C. Sleeman, 92, of 701 Rouse Ave., Youngsville, and formerly of Clarendon, passed away on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 at the Rouse Home.
The Peterson-Blick Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published when available.

George Preston Simon Jr.

George Preston Simon Jr., 92, a former resident of Perry County for 35 years and currently of Chapel Pointe, Carlisle, died on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011 in the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
He was born April 14, 1919 in Mt. Jewett, to the late George P. and Bertha Rathburn Simon.
