December 30th
Cora O. Steele, 79, of 50 Johnson Rd., in Wetmore, near Kane, died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 29, 2011 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born Dec. 10, 1932 in Manorville, she was the daughter of Ray and Helen Cook Transue. On July 11, 1953 in Kane, she married Richard H. Steele, who died in 2005.
Cora was the head cook at the Kane Area Middle School for 27 years.Â
December 28th
William W. Perry, Jr., 70, of 30 Birch St., Kane, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 28, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Oil City.
Born July 16, 1941 in Kane, he was the son of William W. and Betty Powell Perry. On Feb. 14, 1970 in Kane, he married Christine A. Nevel, who died April 15, 1999.
Bill graduated from Kane Area High School in 1959 and later served in the National Guard until 1975. He was a sales representative for Stackpole Corp. in Kane and St. Marys for over 35 years.Â
James H. Gross, 84, of 5 Bridge St., formerly a lifelong resident of Bradford, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, at the Sena Kean Manor.
Born Aug. 18, 1927, in Bradford, he was a son of the late William Clayton and Frances Long Gross.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as an infantry cook.
He was a member of the Bradford Baptist Church and more recently attended the Kushequa Union Church and the Mt. Jewett Assembly of God Church. He had worked in the oil fields before he started his sales career at B&B Electric. Later, he was employed as a chef at the Seneca Casino.

RIDGWAY â County commissioners on Tuesday approved an $11.3 million spending plan that features no new taxes highlighted with a 3-percent wage increase for bargaining and non-bargaining county employees.
"The 2012 budget was presented to the public at our meeting earlier in the month," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg. "We went into the public participation and review process, it's been on display online as well as physically in our office, and I don't believe we've had any comments on it."
James H. Gross, 84, of 5 Bridge St., Mt. Jewett, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 27, 2011, at the Sena-Kean Manor. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc.
December 26th
Ann K. Powell, 87, formerly of Wilcox, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born Aug. 28, 1924, in James City, she was a daughter of Joseph and Anna Mishulk Gezik. She had been married to Norbert Powell who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one sister, Mary Morgan of James City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents and husband, by three children and five brothers.
Mr. William J. âBuzzâ Paris, 80, unexpectedly passed into the next life at his residence, Monday, Dec. 26, 2011.
He was born March 23, 1931 in Butler to the late William V. and Laura Smead Paris.
Mr. Paris served in the in the US Marine Corps during the Korean conflict as a Sgt. and D.I. of the 1st Marine Division. As an area resident, he owned and operated Buzzâs Saw Shop, was self-employed as an independent logger and named 2000 Logger of the Year by AHUG, worked for his son Bud as a logger, Nortrim Loggerâs Insurance Co., and a Sheffield Police Officer.
December 23rd
Anna M. Pierson, 87, of Sheffield, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at the Warren Manor Nursing Home after an extended illness.Â
She was born July 1, 1924 in Warren, to the late Andrew and Anna Hanusik Kujava.
She has resided in Sheffield area most of her entire life and was a 1942 graduate of Sheffield High School. Anna attended Tiona United Methodist Church and was a member of the Sheffield V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. She always enjoyed baking and being a grandmother and great-grandmother.Â
December 21st
Officials of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission [NCPRPDC] are looking forward to the new year as applications are being looked at by state government for PREP [Partnership for Regional and Economic Performance] funding.
During Wednesday's board meeting, the commission's executive director, Eric Bridges, reported that NCPRPDC has complied with the Department of Community and Economic Development's [DCED] requests for a single application for approved funding under PREP.
The Kane Wolves were held to only two points in the second quarter and found themselves playing catchup the rest of the game against a good Cameron County team in a 40-30 loss.
The Red Raiders hit a big 3-pointer right before the buzzer in the first quarter to take a 6-point lead into the second quarter instead of a 3-point lead.
The Wolves' defense played tough but were trying to make big plays all night against a talented team. The free-throw line again was a problem as Kane converted only eight of their 23 tries.
