Francis W. Ahlberg, 89, of 6558 Route 321, Kane, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 29, 2012, at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born Aug. 5, 1922 in Wilcox, he was the son of Olof and Cora Silvis Ahlberg. On Aug. 15, 1947 in East Kane, he married Mary A. Stakley, who died in 1990.
Mr. Ahlberg served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Italy and North Africa, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart medal. Later, he worked for the Pennsylvania Highway Dept. for many years, retiring in 1984.
He was a member of the Wilcox Sportsman's Club, the Kane Fish & Game Club and the American Legion in Wilcox.

New student pickup procedure to begin March 19

A new procedure for student pickup by private vehicles will begin Monday, March 19 at the Kane Elementary School.
"We'll give it a whirl a see what happens," School Principal Linda Lorenzo said Tuesday in discussing the new procedure at a public meeting at the school library.
Here are the basics of the new procedure:
*Parents who arrive in vehicles to pick up their children after school are being asked to display "school-issued" name-tags near the windshield. "The best place is on the visor on the driver's side," the school said in a statement to parents.

Local 'Leapling'  marks her 'second' birthday

Born on Feb. 29 in 2004-- a Leap Year, local resident Natalia Chittester had to wait until Wednesday to mark her official "second" birthday.
"I think it's kind of neat," Natalia said. "When I'm 8, I can be only 2."
Natalia, the daughter of Scott and Dessa Driscoll Chittester of Wetmore Township, brought cookies to school Wednesday to celebrate her birthday with her classmates at the Kane Elementary School. She is a second-grade student in the class taught by teacher Pam Karlene.
"They all sang 'happy birthday' to me," Natalia said with a wide smile.
