Kane girls track team takes 3rd at District meet

May 20, 2012

BROOKVILLE – The girls track team traditionally has a quality showing and finishes in the top five teams at districts each year, and this year placing third was fantastic for us considering that we only had two seniors participating at the meet. Brookville is unbeatable as a team and Elk County Catholic is always one of the class teams of our area so I was extremely pleased with our team score. The meet for us was marked by big personal best performances and that is exactly how it should be with proper training and motivated, dedicated and talented athletes.

Kane boys track team earns D9 crown

May 20, 2012

BROOKVILLE – On a beautiful evening for track and field at Brookville, the Kane Boys Track team put it all together and came up with a hard fought, well deserved team title, scoring 55 team points.
The lead in this meet must have changed hands a dozen times as Elk County Catholic, Port Allegany, Clarion, Cranberry, Sheffield and North Clarion, and Kane kept putting points on the board as event after event was contested. Towards the end of the meet the 3200-meter run, the 200 dash, the pole vault and the 1600 relay results were still coming in.

Deb Wensel reflects on career as Kane teacher

May 18, 2012

Deb Wensel literally followed in her husband’s footsteps when she began her Kane teaching career in 1984.
Craig Wensel’s shift to the high school that year left an opening for a math teacher at the middle school. His wife, Deb gave up her post-college role as a “stay-at-home mom” to fill the vacancy.
“I inherited his job,” Wensel joked as she reflected on a 28-year teaching career that will end in the three weeks with her retirement.

Kane Lady Wolves pick up big win over Brockway

May 16, 2012

On a beautiful day for a ball game the Kane Lady Wolves softball team put together maybe their best game of the year as they knocked off Brockway 10-9 in a 7-inning thriller.
In the first two innings, both pitchers seemed to have the batters off balance as Kane's Kyla Hoag had four strikeouts while Brockway's pitcher recorded five. Brockway was able to take an early one run lead in the top of the first. The Lady Rovers' second hitter got a single then stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. She scored the game's first run as the next batter got a sacrifice fly.

Kane council gambles on another mild winter

May 16, 2012

The Kane Borough Council is looking ahead to another mild winter.
Instead of buying 1,000 tons of anti-skid material to spread on icy borough streets in the winter, council voted 5-1 Monday to seek new bids for just 500 tons of the tiny pebbles.
Council is gambling that the 500 tons—plus the stone left over from this year—will be sufficient for road maintenance next winter.

Smethport powers their way to victory

May 14, 2012

In a game that was like night and day, the Smethport Lady Hubbers proved why they are one of the top teams in the area as they pounded their way to a 19-5 win over the Kane Lady Wolves.
The first three innings belonged to pitcher Kyla Hoag as she struck out five batters and held the powerful Lady Hubbers to only one run.
Kane got off to a good start as they responded to Smethport's run in the top of the first with a run of their own as Hoag worked a walk then proceeded to steal second and third and came home as Kaila Jamerson hit a grounder to second.
