County endorses application for ‘shelter’ grant

SMETHPORT – A high rate of poverty and substantial unemployment have led to an ongoing “homeless” problem in McKean County.
To address this dilemma, the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) in Bradford is seeking a grant of $68,374 from the state Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED).
Using funding from the United Way and other sources, the YWCA will match the grant “dollar-for-dollar,” according to Amy Pierce. She is the executive director of the YWCA, which operates the only “homeless shelter” in McKean County.

Another appeal made to change timber value

SMETHPORT – Within a month, Jim Herzog of Smethport again will be appealing the assessment on his timber land in McKean County.
A notice he received earlier this month from the county assessment office shows that the value for “Clean and Green” forest reserve properties is $255 per acre.
Herzog, however, claims that all forest properties under the “Clean and Green (C&G)” program should be valued at only $94 per acre.

Milliards charged with multiple counts of arson

RIDGWAY – A joint investigation between the Pennsylvania State Police at the Ridgway barracks and the Ridgway Borough Police Department has resulted in the arrest of Francis "Tony" Milliard, 54, and Anthony Milliard, 28, both of Ridgway.
Francis Milliard was apprehended on felony arrest warrants for multiple counts of arson, criminal mischief, and recklessly endangering another person, charges related to a May 30 fire at the residence of Pauline Smith, 521 West Main St. in Ridgway Township.
Anthony Milliard was also charged as a co-defendant in the matter.

More teams sought for Kane Relay For Life

The Kane area always has been a major supporter of the annual Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society.
This year, however, interest in the major fundraiser appears to have waned.
Only four teams so far have registered to participate in the Relay For Life to be held Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Kane High School track.
"Kane was once very, very big among our Relays," Katie Dupree said Monday. "But this year we only have four teams. That's very low for Kane. Some of our former teams didn't have new people to take over."

Family Dollar opens in Kane

A line of people gathered on Saturday July 21 at the doors of the Family Dollar Store for their 8 a.m. official grand opening ceremony of the 519 North Fraley Street location.  The Kane Family Dollar store gave away two youth bicycles to one lucky boy and girl and $5 gift cards to the first 50 patrons.  Patrons were also invited to enjoy refreshments and sales throughout the day.  Acting Manager Cindy Oyler is unsure of exactly how many patrons the Family Dollar of Kane saw over their grand opening weekend but she and her staff were “very busy serving a lot of people.”

Garcia excels as certified nurse-midwife

When the economy took a turn for the worst after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, bilingual reporter Kimberly Garcia knew she needed to begin again.
Because of a nationwide shortage of nurses and her own personal experience with midwives, Garcia, 45, enrolled at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland as a nursing and nurse-midwifery student.
Immediately, Garcia realized she had found her calling in one of the oldest professions in the world.

Carl I. Stenberg

July 22, 2012

Carl I. Stenberg, 58, of 687 Six Mile Rd., Tiona, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Kane Community Hospital.
Born Jan. 30, 1954, in Warren, he was a son of Irvin and Violet Manross Stenberg.
Mr. Stenberg served aboard the USS Oklahoma City and was an electrician in the Navy. He was employed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Studio K Dancers perform at Disney World

A big, once in a lifetime dream came true on Saturday, June 23 for 22 dance students from Studio K in Kane.
These dancers had the opportunity to dance at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. They started their dancing day with a workshop in the “Cast Members Only” rehearsal facility. The workshop was taught by Dena Goff, lead staging director and choreographer for the Magic Kingdom Castle Shows. Ms. Goff has been a dancer and choreographer with Disney World for over 30 years.

Several criminal cases filed in Kane District Court

Several criminal cases have been filed in Kane District Court.
Information on the following cases is from official documents filed with the court:
*Scott Tyler Fiero, 22, of 120 N. Fraley St., Kane, is charged with possession of marijuana for personal use, drug paraphernalia (glass smoking device), driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs, careless driving, unsafe movement when entering traffic, operating a vehicle with a cracked windshield, failure to wear a seat belt and various other vehicle code infractions.
State Police Trooper Matthew Petrof placed the charges.

Family Dollar store in Kane is open for business

The new Family Dollar store on North Fraley Street in Kane is now open for business.
The store, which carries a wide variety of merchandise and groceries, is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The store is open Sundays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The official grand-opening ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Family Dollar is planning several special events Saturday in conjunction with the grand opening of the store.
Each of the first 50 customers Saturday will receive a $5 Family Dollar gift card. Shoppers who spend at least $25 will receive a $5 discount.
