No one was injured Wednesday evening in a smoky fire at the Peking Wok Chinese restaurant at 79 Fraley St. in uptown Kane.
Kane Fire Chief Tim Holt said the fire erupted in a ballast for a florescent light. This light is used for backlighting for a large Chinese landscape picture on the wall of the restaurant.
JAMES CITY â€“The proposed Highland Township budget for 2014 shows no increase in property taxes.
Highland supervisors Paul Burton Sr. and Jim Wolfe agreed Wednesday to adopt the tentative budget that will be on public display at the township office. The supervisors are expected to adopt a final budget at their meeting Dec. 11 at the township building in James City.
JAMES CITY â€“ Joe Milstead, a write-in candidate, has been confirmed as the winner in the Nov. 5 election for a two-year seat on the Highland Township Board of Supervisors.
According to figures provided Wednesday by Kim Frey, director of the Elk County Board of Elections, Milstead edged Glen Hulings for the seat by a vote of 94-90.
Patricia Fanning Welser, 58, of Wattsburg and formerly of Kane,Â died Monday morning, Nov. 11, 2013, at her residence following a courageous six-year battle with cancer.
She was born inÂ Norristown, N.J. on Nov. 10, 1955 a daughter of the late Patsy and Elizabeth Schwarz Fanning Vito.
Hazel Bell Samples went to be with her Lord on the 8th of November at the age of 91.
She was the daughter of the late William and Myrtle Bell.Â
She is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Edgar L. Samples. She was the devoted mother of four children, Sharon (Tim) Bond, Chris, Wayne, and Norman (Kathy) Samples. She was the loving grandmother of seven grandchildren, including, Eric (Jessie) Bond and Alex Bond, and six great-grandchildren.Â
The time has come for Kane and Wetmore Township to ante up more tax dollars for the operation of the Kane Volunteer Fire Department.
There's no tax increase in the proposed Kane borough budget for 2014.
The Kane Borough Council voted 7-0 Tuesday in favor of the proposal that calls for $1,369,703 in expenditures.

William Timothy Gentry, 53 formerly of Sheffield, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 in the Warren Manor.
Mr. Gentry was born Oct. 7, 1960 in Warren, a son of Walter William and Alice B. McCarter Gentry.
Mr. Gentry had lived in Maryland for many years prior to returning to the area and had worked in the construction industry.
He was a member of the Sheffield United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a sister, Kathleen A. Carley, Ludlow; a brother, Daniel F. Gentry, Warren; a niece, a nephew and several great nieces and nephews along with a dear friend and caregiver, Dawn.
