Lady Wolves defeat Ramettes in overtime

The Kane Lady Wolves and Johnsonburg Ramettes played one of their usual barn burners on Wednesday night in the Wolves’ Den. After four quarters of regulation and a four-minute overtime period, the Lady Wolves came away with a hard fought 59-57 win in a game that was a make-up game from Saturday night’s Coudersport Tournament consolation game.

Driver in 6-fatality wreck taken to McKean County Jail

"It was time."
This terse comment from Kane District Court Judge David Engman came Wednesday after his action that transfers Kathleen S. Douglas to the McKean County Jail.
Douglas, 37, of Kane is charged with manslaughter as an alleged drug-influenced driver in a horrific six-fatality traffic accident Aug. 31 near Lantz Corners.

Trial in child starving case to begin Jan. 6

A trial is slated to begin Jan. 6 in McKean County Court for a Mt. Jewett couple who allegedly withheld food from their three adoptive children as a form of punishment.
Mark Allen Hooper, 43, and his wife, Susan Aileen Hooper, 40, of 21 Anderson St., Mt. Jewett, face felony charges for allegedly endangering the welfare of the children.

Cinderella’s Closet being set up to help Kane “Princesses”

Households in Kane are being asked to clean out their closets for a good cause. Cinderella’s Closet of Kane, Pennsylvania will be up and running soon, hoping to be operational in time for Kane High School’s Junior/Senior Prom on May 3.

Property valuation decreases in borough of Kane

The assessed property valuation has declined in the borough of Kane.
This is another economic blow to the community because taxes are based on assessed property valuation.
The Kane Borough Council is scheduled to meet Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the borough building to adopt a tax rate for 2014. 
The rate is expected to be 9.375 mills-- the same as this year. However, the same rate is not expected to generate as much tax revenue because of the decline in the assessed property valuation in Kane.

Elk County Commissioners approve tax hike

RIDGWAY – The Elk County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday morning voted to adopt their proposed 2014 budget which includes a one-mill increase, the first hike since 2009.
"We haven't received any comment from any taxpayer," Elk County Commissioner June Sorg said regarding the required 20-day comment period as the budget was displayed at the commissioners' office. "The increase is one mill and that usually brings in about $500,000 to the county, and it will be a $50 increase for a $50,000 assessment (roughly the same as a house with a $100,000 market value)."

Jean Anderson Espin

Jean Anderson Espin, 77, of 375 Foote Ave., Jamestown, N.Y., died at 10:05 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 in the WCA Hospital.
She was born in St. Marys on Feb. 14, 1936, daughter of G. Arthur and Bertha Selle Anderson.
She was a 1954 graduate of St. Marys High School and was employed as a clerk at Anderson’s Cleaners for 30 years and retired on April 30, 1998. Jean was a life member of the VFW Post #53 Auxiliary and was also a member of the Eagles Club Aerie 2145 auxiliary and the AmVets auxiliary Post #726. She was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church.
