The Kane Lady Wolves overcame a sluggish start in Wednesday night’s contest against the Curwensville Golden Tide to come away with a 46-32 win in the opening round of the District 9 AA playoffs.
The Lady Wolves played the Tide 11 days ago in a Saturday morning makeup game, and shot horrendously, narrowly escaping with the win. Wednesday night appeared to be heading the same way but the Lady Wolves outscored the visitors 20-5 in the third quarter to take control of the contest.
As a young child, LaRue Smith often played "hospital" with her sister.
"I'd bandage her up and pretend she was my patient," Smith said.
This childhood activity inspired a half-century nursing career for Smith, who retired three weeks ago as the "night supervisor" at Kane Community Hospital.
"I always wanted to be a nurse," Smith said. "I had the desire to take care of people."
