The Kane Shade Tree Commission has been "challenged" to plant 150 new trees by next year-- the Kane bicentennial.
Two grants will help the commission meet this target.
HAZEL HURST – The long-awaited Lantz Corners sewer project is one step closer to reality.
The Hamlin Township Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 Monday to seek bids for the project as soon as the final construction drawings are complete.
Gail Reinard, 51, of 1907 1/2 Pennsylvania Ave. E in Warren, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 9, 2013 at UPMC-Hamot in Erie.
He was born on April 9, 1961 in Bradford, the son of Tom Reinard of Hazel Hurst and Patricia Reinard of Kane. On July 11, 1998 in Mt. Jewett, he married Norma Baker who survives.
Mr. Reinard had been employed as a bus driver for the ATA. He was also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as well as a member of the Lafayette, Mt. Jewett and Kane Volunteer Fire Departments and the Loyal Order of Moose in Bradford.
Ann Jane Cook, 90, of 200 Poplar St., Kane, died Sunday evening, Feb. 10, 2013 at The Lutheran Home at Kane, where she resided for the past few days.
Born April 12, 1922 in Kane, she was the daughter of Thomas A. and Cecelia Nicklas Cannon. On Aug. 25, 1942 in Kane, she married Neil H. Cook, Sr., who died in 1980.
Mrs. Cook was a bookkeeper for Ron Cook Garage, her son's business, for many years. She also was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Kane.

Faith E. Penworth, 100, of 226 Weownit Rd., Emporium, died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 in the afternoon.
She was born Jan. 21, 1913 in Liberty, a daughter of the late Rev. Frank and Orpha Hudson Stoddard.
In 1946 in Tunkhannock she married the late Elmer Penworth, who died in 1982.
Mrs. Penworth was a member of the Methodist Church in Hazelhurst and Mt. Jewett and a member of the Mt. Jewett Senior Center.
She is survived by a daughter, Gloria Groff, Emporium and several step-great grandchildren.
Charles H. Bertzfield Sr., 72, of 1763 Wetmore Rd., Kane, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 at his residence.
Born Oct. 24, 1940, in Landisville, he was a son of the late John and Elva Delinger Bertzfield. On Sept. 8, 1979, in Blue Ridge Summit, he married Carole Burns, who survives.
Earlier in his life, Mr. Bertzfield had operated personal care homes and had also owned antique shops. He belonged to the Presbyterian Church, the AARP and the American Hunting Club. He enjoyed hunting, remodeling and woodworking and loved spending time with his family.
Drew S. Wile, 25, of 111 Dawson St., Kane, died early Friday morning, Feb. 8, 2013 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident atop James City Hill.
Born June 30, 1987 in Kane, he was the son of Betsy A. Hallberg Wile and Tim R. Wile.
Drew was a fabricator for Portville Truck, Portville, N.Y. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks #329 in Kane, where he enjoyed bowling, and belonged to the Kane Area Pool League. He also enjoyed working on his truck.
KEATING TWP. – The Kane-based state police report investigating a fatal crash that killed an 8-year-old male on Friday at 3:25 p.m. along E. Valley Road, west of Kent Hollow in Keating Township.
February 8th
This is the 15th and last installment of my photographic trip to the wilds of Alaska. I’m now in my final day in Katmai National Park, home for over 2,000 brown bears. I have made this trip to finally see and photograph the brown bears, and along the way got to see an amazing assortment of wildlife and scenic beauty. This was indeed, the trip of a lifetime.
JAMES CITY – A Kane man was killed Friday morning when an empty coal truck struck his passenger car at the intersection of Route 66 and the entrance to James City.
Ridgway-based State Police identified the victim as Drew S. Wile, 25, of Kane. He was the lone occupant in the car.
