Street paving project winds down in Kane

The annual street paving project in Kane is nearly complete.
Workers from IA Construction of Franklin hoped to finish the project Friday. Crews worked Friday on Poplar Street and Wetmore Avenue near the intersection with Fraley Street.

Jack D. Safreed, 87, of 14 Oberg Ave., Mt. Jewett, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. in Mt. Jewett.

Candidate is on ballot for vacant seat in Highland

JAMES CITY – A lone candidate will appear on the ballot Nov. 5 to fill the remaining two years in the term of former Highland Township Supervisor Charlie Vaughn.
According to Kim Frey, director of the Elk County Board of Elections, Glen Hulings of James City will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot as a Democratic candidate for a two-year term. A Republican candidate will not be listed on the ballot for a two-year term, Frey said.

Young Kane volleyball team looking to learn on the fly

Kane volleyball coach Judy Kessler has seen nearly everything in her 20-plus years of coaching the Lady Wolves. While she and assistant coach Rae El Johnson have a few key returning players, the 2013 squad is loaded with some talented young players. Coach Kessler gives the following outlook for the season.

The Kane Marching Band is under the direction of Matthew McClard. Assistant directors are Henry Sobieski and Joe Thornburg. The Color Guard Director is Kathleen Prosperi.

Kane girls’ soccer team optimistic about upcoming season

Last year’s Kane girls’ soccer team struggled at times due to low numbers on the team after some key injuries left the team playing shorthanded a number of games. Despite the thin bench, the 2012 team played hard from whistle to whistle. This year, the team will have 18 players on the roster, including nine returning letter winners and seven seniors.

Kane girls’ golf team expected to be competitive

While Kane golf coach Nathan Smith lost “the best golfer I ever coached, Kyla Hoag” to graduation, don’t feel too sorry for him. The cupboard isn’t empty for the girls’ team, as Smith has four golfers ready to kick off their senior seasons. Three other golfers round out the 2013 squad for Smith and assistant coach Jason Holt.

“New look” Wolves ready to tackle 2013 opponents

The 2012 Kane Wolves Football team came up just 12 seconds short of a District 9 title in coach Todd Silfies's first year at the helm. The Wolves finished the season with a 7-4 record.
The Wolves' coaching staff must find a few replacements for some key departing seniors. Coach Silfies is hesitant to use the word “replace,” insisting that this is “a new year, a new team and will have a new look.” While there will be a number of new faces in key positions, Silfies does have 12 returning letter winners.

KAHS cross country teams ready to run

Kane cross country coach Adam Smelko is eagerly awaiting the 2013 season. Team members have logged a lot of miles over the summer training for this season. Coach Smelko feels that this year, the Kane boys’ team has “both quality and quantity.”
