Kane boys’ golf coach Nathan Smith has a number of talented, but relatively inexperienced golfers on the team this season. The veteran coach has a few seniors on the 2013 squad, but the golfers with the most experience are underclassmen.

County grants tax-relief status to Kane Magnetics site

SMETHPORT – If the state gives its blessing, a new owner of the 17.5-acre Kane Magnetics complex at 700 Elk Ave. in Kane won't be paying property taxes until 2023.
The McKean County Board of Commissioners agreed Tuesday to place the defunct plant in a tax-relief program known as the Keystone Opportunity Zone (KOZ).

Lady Wolves scrimmage against Punxsy

Kane's Haylee Mague closes in on the ball during the Lady Wolves' scrimmage against Punxsutawney on Wednesday afternoon. Coach Allie Saquin's team will open the regular season in Smethport on Tuesday. The Lady Wolves have their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 5, when they host West Forest.

Paul A. Venteicher

Paul A. Venteicher, 82, of Edgewood, Iowa, died on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home.
He was born on May 21, 1931, in Tilden, Neb., the son of Anton and Margaret (Bohnenkamp) Venteicher. In 1941, when he was 10 years old, his family moved to a farm north of Manchester, where they lived until 1948 when they moved to a farm west of Edgewood.
On Sept. 10, 1951, Paul was united in marriage to Norma Jean Klostermann at St. Boniface Church in New Vienna. Together they farmed for 57 years. In 2008, they moved to Edgewood.

Kane fails again in bid for share of federal money

SMETHPORT – The borough of Kane has not fared well in competing the past two years for a share of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money allocated to McKean County.
The borough struck out again Tuesday as the McKean County Board of Commissioners approved the "best use" for $225,825 in CDBG funds awarded to the county.

Local dairy farmer provides milk to team

Local dairy farmer Jim Detrick has been providing the Kane High football team with milk for two-a-day sessions for the last several years. This year he was the recipient of a grant provided by the Grassroots Dairy Promotion Board.

Robert L. Evans

Robert L. Evans, age 66, of James City, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013.
He was born on Dec. 19, 1946, a son of the late Edward and Velma (McCracken) Evans.
He was a former New Sewickley Twp. Police officer, owned and operated a large equipment business, and most recently worked for Allegheny Color.

Conrad F. Anderson

Conrad F. Anderson, 94, formerly of 620 Welsh St., Kane, died Saturday morning, Aug. 24, 2013 at The Lutheran Home at Kane, where he had resided.
Born Oct. 26, 1918 in Warren, he was the son of Gust and Signe Anderson. On May 10, 1951 in Kane, he married Alice Palmquist, who died in 2007.
Mr. Anderson was a self-employed accountant for many years. He belonged to Tabor Ev. Lutheran Church in Kane, Kane Lodge #566 F&AM and the Rod and Gun Club in Jamestown, N.Y.
