LUDLOW – A large crowd turned out Monday for the traditional Memorial Day program at the Gibbs Hill Cemetery near Ludlow.
MT. JEWETT – Paul Swanson, Commander of Mt Jewett American Legion Post 574 and retired U.S. Army National Guard, was the speaker for Monday’s Memorial Day program. A nice crowd attended the program, which was held at the gazebo after the late morning parade.
Delores Lawson Woodall, 36, of 307 Kinzua Ave., Kane, and previously of Lynchburg, Va., passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Kane Community Hospital, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near the intersection of Routes 66 and 948 in Highland Township.
Born April 17, 1977, in Kane, she was a daughter of Dolores Milford and Joseph Herron. Her adoptive parents are Michael and Catherine Hazlett Lawson. On Jan. 30, 2000, in Lynchburg, she married Jesse B. Woodall who survives.
Mrs. Woodall worked as a cashier in a convenience store.

SHIPPENSBURG – Twelve members of the Kane boys’ and girls’ track teams made the journey to the PIAA Championship Meet to compete with the best athletes in Pennsylvania. Two members of the team, Nick Anderson and Sean Rolick, placed in the top eight in the state to earn medals. The PIAA meet began Friday morning at Shippensburg University on an unseasonably cold, windy day.
Three Kane residents were killed in a two-vehicle crash late Thursday night near the intersection of Routes 66 and 948 in Highland Township.
Chester F. "Chet" Peterson, 85, of 804 Welsh St., Kane, died Thursday evening, May 23, 2013 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born April 30, 1928 in Kane, he was the son of John and Nellie Peterson Peterson. On April 26, 1952 in Kane, he married Frances D. McCauley, who survives.
Mr. Peterson worked as a tool and die maker in the machine shop at Stackpole in Kane for 40 years. Later, he was a part-time bus driver for the ATA.
Robert D. "Rob" Higginbotham, 33, of 420 Park Ave., Kane, died Thursday evening, May 23, 2013 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Highland Township south of Kane.
Born Nov. 7, 1979 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the rev. Robert W. and Ruth McDowell Higginbotham Jr.Â
Rob was a drug and alcohol counselor at Abraxis near Marienville. A member of the First United Methodist Church in Kane, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a coach for the Kane Area Soccer Associating for those under six years old.
Richard Marcel Smith, 77, of Bridge Street, Johnsonburg, died suddenly at home Friday, May 24, 2013.
He was born on Dec. 30, 1935 in Kane, the son of Dewey Marcel and Linda Wilhelmina (Anderson) Smith. A Johnsonburg resident, he graduated from Wilcox Area High School and Penn State University, with both a Bachelor of Science and a Master’s Degree.
On June 14, 1958, he married Gwendolyn Preston Smith, who passed away March 28, 2010.
Clyde "Punky" Nelson II, 33, of 427 Biddle St., passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near the intersection of Route 66 and Route 948 in Highland Township.
Born June 15, 1979, in Kane, he was a son of Clyde and Joyce Robinson Nelson.
Mr. Nelson was employed by ITL on Montmorenci. He was a member of the Ridgway Loyal Order of the Moose and a former member of the Kane Moose #130.

Alice S. Peterson, 92, formerly of Mt. Jewett, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening, May 22, 2013, at the Lutheran Home at Kane where she resided.
Born April 14, 1921, in Knox, she was a daughter of the late Amer and Marie Moore Silvis. On Sept. 8, 1943, she married Andrew Grant Peterson who preceded her in death in 1989.
Mrs. Peterson was a beautician for 57 years and was the owner of the former Chateau Beauty Salon in Mt. Jewett. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mt. Jewett.
