Kane Elks Lodge #329 held their annual Flag Day Ceremony on Friday evening at the gazebo in Evergreen Park across from the lodge on Chestnut Street. The day holds special significance to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, as each lodge holds an observance of the day. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by the Second Continental Congress.
Many people in this area of McKean County are familiar with the Kinzua Valley. This column refers to my Kinzua Valley only, and you will soon learn what I mean by â€śmy.â€ť To some folks, the Kinzua Valley is the valley that runs under the Kinzua Bridge and down towards Kushequa. To others it is the valley that runs from Westline down to the Red Bridge area. These are certainly both the Kinzua Valley, but not mine, as I will try to explain.

Edward D. "Eddie Pete" Peterson, 77, of 908 Welsh St., Kane, died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon, June 12, 2013 in the E.R. of the Kane Community Hospital after being stricken at home.
Born Feb. 3, 1936 in Kane, he was the son of Edward S. and Cora P. Detwiler Peterson.Â On April 25, 1969 in Johnsonburg, he married Ann J. Mays, who survives.
Mr. Peterson was an operator for Pennsylvania American Water Co. for over 25 years, and was a union steward for the company.

Carmela Ann "Melly"Â Napolitan, 83, of Bradford, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the BRMC Pavilion in Bradford.
Born May 25, 1930, in Hazel Hurst,Â she was a daughter of the late Michael and Antoinette Santaniello Napolitan.
Ms. Napolitan was a graduate of Mansfield University and began her teaching career in Savona, N.Y., in 1952. Later she served as an elementary teacher for 42 years in the Bradford Area School District, retiring in 1995.
Carmela was a member of the Retired Teachers' Association and the St. Joseph's Rosary Society.

Carmela A. Napolitan, 83, of 1154 East Main St., Bradford, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Pavilion in Bradford.
