Big 30 Academic Banquet

Kane High School Principal Todd Stanko (left) congratulates senior Isaac Robbins (right), who will represent his school tonight at the annual Big 30 Academic Banquet in Olean, N.Y. Robbins is the son of Kim and John Robbins of Kane. Robbins has a grade point average (GPA) of 4.24, the highest in his senior class. Robbins, who will graduate next month from Kane High School, plans to attend Juniata College in Huntington as a pre-med major.

Peterson hurls 2-hit shutout in Wolves win over Elkers

The Kane Wolves’ baseball team played an unconventional double header on Saturday after at Pat Santilli Field. The Wolves shutout the Ridgway Elkers 9-0 in the first game, then took on the Curwensville Golden Tide in the nightcap and lost 11-4.

Raymond K. Phillips

Raymond K. Phillips, 55, of 125 Walnut St., died Friday, May 9, 2014 at UPMC Hamot.
Born Aug. 20, 1958, in Pasadena, Texas, he was a son of Wayne and Jan McMinn Phillips. On March 30, 1984, in McArthur, Ohio, he married Diane Smathers who survives.
Mr. Phillips was a head sawyer for over 30 years, most recently working for Zuzek's Lumber Mill. Currently he had been employed by Kane Lawn and Garden.

Joseph C. Adams

Joseph C. Adams, 71, 209 Market St., Warren, formerly of Kane, died Saturday evening, May 10, 2014 at UPMC Hamot in Erie. Arrangements, in care of the Ronald McDonald II Funeral Home in Kane, are incomplete and will be announced.

Jury: Armed robbery suspects not guilty

RIDGWAY – The trial concluded Friday with a not guilty verdict for the three defendants charged in an armed robbery of a Johnsonburg home.

KAHS academic banquet award winners announced

The Kane Area High School gym was filled with Kane Area High School academic award winners and their families on Wednesday night at the school’s annual academic banquet. Eighty KAHS students were recognized for their academic excellence.

Virgil C. Nelson

Virgil C. Nelson, 81, of 15 Church St. in Ludlow, died Thursday afternoon, May 8, 2014 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born Sept. 22, 1932 in Kane, he was the son of Frank E. and Hannah C. Freeburg Nelson. On June 25, 1955 in Kane, he married Carol “Jean” Scott, who survives.
Mr. Nelson served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, discharged as corporal.
He was a banker for 38 years for the former Warren National Bank in Sheffield, then Kane, and finally Warren, retiring as comptroller.
