Karlene M. Swanson

Karlene M. Swanson, 66, of 5 Jackson Ave., Mt. Jewett, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014 at her home.
Born Dec. 29, 1947, in Mt. Jewett, she was a daughter of the late Verle and Twila Hillyard Keller. On Feb. 7, 1970, in Mt. Jewett, she married Bill Swanson who survives.
Mrs. Swanson loved riding motorcycles with her husband. She had been employed by Keystone Thermister in Mt. Jewett, from which she retired in 2004 and was a member of the Mt. Jewett United Methodist Church.

County OKs pact to help fund Kane project

SMETHPORT – An agreement approved Tuesday by the McKean County Board of Commissioners will help fund a proposed project on Fraley Street in Uptown Kane.
The McKean County Redevelopment and Housing Authority is planning to create four one-bedroom apartments on the second floor of the Goodwill Store at 86 Fraley St.
The apartments will serve "transition age youth," according to the agreement. The youth may work at the Goodwill Store, it has been noted.
County Commissioners Joe DeMott, Al Pingie and Cliff Lane voted Tuesday to back an agreement with the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.

Pingie is hoping to lead county government in 2016

SMETHPORT – Al Pingie is hoping to follow Joe DeMott as the chairman of the McKean County Board of Commissioners in 2016.
DeMott, a Republican from Port Allegany, already has announced that he will not seek re-election next year as a county commissioner.
Pingie, a Republican from Bradford Township, is seeking re-election next year to another four-year term as a county commissioner.
Cliff Lane, a Democrat from Turtlepoint, also is planning to seek another term as county commissioner in 2015.

Laura L. Isadore is new county prothonotary

SMETHPORT – Laura L. Isadore is the new prothonotary and clerk of courts for McKean County.
She replaces Bonnie Moore Howard, who retired Nov. 5 due to medical reasons. She served as prothonotary for nearly 30 years.
Howard,a resident of Coleville in Keating Township near Smethport, had worked in the prothonotary's office at the county courthouse in Smethport since 1969. 
A Republican, she had been the prothonotary since winning election in 1985 for the first of eight four-year terms.

Longtime county official won't seek re-election

SMETHPORT – Harrijane Hannon Moore next year will end a 28-year career as a leader in the McKean County government.
Moore confirmed Tuesday that she will not seek re-election next year as the county's register of wills and clerk of orphan's court.
"I've been around long enough," Moore joked in discussing her decision to retire as a public servant.

Causer to host Open House at Kane office

HARRISBURG – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) is inviting area residents to an open house at his Kane district office on Thursday, Dec. 11, from 3-6 p.m.
The office, located at 55 Fraley St., was previously operated by Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren). However, as a result of the legislative redistricting process, Kane and other communities in western McKean County are now part of Causer’s 67th Legislative District.

Miami QB Ryan Tannehill threw 2 second half touchdowns to rally a comeback victory over Buffalo. Buffalo was moving the ball up and down the field early, but could not seem to find the end zone to cap drivers. They clung to a 9-3 lead as they kept Miami in check. Tannehill was able to rally his team’s offense to score 19 unanswered points to seal the game and second place in the AFC East.

Kane sewer rates proposed to remain the same

There's no increase in the proposed Kane sewer rates for 2015.
Acting at a meeting Monday at the borough building, the Kane Borough Sewer Authority voted 5-0 in favor of a proposed sewer fund budget for the next year.
Dave Peterson, chairman of the authority, voted in favor of the plan along with members Howard Kane (borough council president), Phil Lingenfelter (sewage treatment plant foreman), Frank Wojcik and Jim McCloskey. Peterson and McCloskey are Wetmore Township residents.

Kane resident waives hearing on violation of Megan's Law

A Kane resident waived his preliminary hearing Monday on a charge linked with his lifetime registration for convicted sexual offenders under Megan's Law.
Travis James Kelly, 29, who had been residing at 312 Greeves St., Kane, remains locked up in the McKean County Jail near Smethport pending proceedings in McKean County Court.
He had been placed in jail on $20,000 cash bail. Without opposition from Assistant District Attorney Ashley Shade, Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman agreed Monday to reduce the bail to $10,000 cash.
