Kane boutique has free wigs for cancer patients

Kane area cancer patients who lose their hair due to chemotherapy treatments don’t need to travel far to obtain a free wig.
Becky Vogel of Kane is licensed by the American Cancer Society to provide free wigs at her business—Becky’s Boutique at 439 Biddle St., Kane.

Ohio man donates Kane sword to Kane Historic Preservation Society

Rob Price, a resident of Dover, Ohio and longtime friend of Kane family descendent Thomas L Kane IV and his wife, Virginia, recently made a trip to the Kane Depot to present the Kane Historic Preservation Society with a sword and a book that belonged to Kane Borough founder General Thomas L Kane.
Price, who said he donated the items on behalf of his late friends, the Kanes, had been in touch with Dick Bly of the local history group and made the donation on Wednesday afternoon at the Kane Depot.

Airport authority sets salary for ‘interim’ director

LAFAYETTE TOWNSHIP – The Bradford Regional Airport Authority celebrated the Wednesday birthday of “interim” airport director Alicia Dankesreiter of Wilcox by setting her annual salary at $62,000, retroactive to Sept. 24.
The authority last month named Dankesreiter as the “interim” director after firing Tom Frungillo of Allegany, N.Y. The reasons for the dismissal have not been made public.

2 prospective buyers for Mt. Jewett sewer system

MT. JEWETT – Two private companies have expressed an interest in buying the Mt. Jewett sewage system.
Aqua America and Pennsylvania American Water have requested information on the Mt. Jewett sewer system, which currently is up for sale. 
The Mt. Jewett Regional Sewer Authority plans to open bids for the possible sale of the sewer system at its next meeting Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Mt. Jewett borough building.
Patrick McGuire, chairman of the authority, said Tuesday that both Aqua and Pennsylvania American have shown interest in acquiring the Mt. Jewett sewer system.

County planner resigns after 7 months on job

SMETHPORT – Kenneth D. Baldwin of Bradford is stepping down as the McKean County planner after serving only seven months on the job.
At the age of 37, Baldwin took over in March to replace Debbie Lunden, who retired after serving as the county planner for 26 years.
"I will be resigning from my position as planning director effective Thursday, Oct. 23," Baldwin said in a statement Tuesday. "I will be transitioning back to the private sector.

Cross Country team ends regular season with Dutch, Elkers

The Kane High School and Middle School cross country teams finished out their regular seasons competing against St. Marys and Ridgway on Tuesday on the Wolves’ home course. No team scores were kept as only the Kane boys and the St. Marys girls fielded full teams.
The KMS boys ran against four Dutch runners in the early race. Kane’s Lane Hillard crossed the finish line first in a time of 11:00 followed by teammate Ryan Hunt in 11:19. St. Marys’ Ryan Hepler was next across the line in 11:28, just edging out the Wolves’ Hayden Barr (11:29).

Lady Wolves lose to Sheffield in straight sets in Wolves’ Den

The Kane Lady Wolves turned in what coach Judy Kessler called "their worst match of the season" as they got swept by the Sheffield Lady Wolverines in three games, 25-12, 25-9 and 25-7.
The Lady Wolverines jumped out to a 7-2 lead in game one. A block by Camryn Cummings and a kill by Maddie Stanisch were bright spots for the Lady Wolves as the visitors went on to win 25-12.

Thomas W. Mehalko

Thomas W. Mehalko, 67, of 514 Horner Rd., Wilcox, died early Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014 at Penn Highlands Elk in St. Marys.
Born Feb. 1, 1947, in Wilcox, he was a son of George and Nellie Turzanski Mehalko. On July 27, 1968, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wilcox, he married Anita Johnson who survives.
Mr. Mehalko had worked for Penn Tech and, more recently, was employed by Alpha Sintered Metals in Ridgway.

Guidelines planned for Mt. Jewett development site

SMETHPORT – The county Department of Economic Development is planning to prepare guidelines for a proposed commercial project at Main and Center streets in Mt. Jewett.
Sherri Geary, director of the Department of Economic Development, said Monday that a developer has expressed an interest in the site. She said details for the proposal are confidential and are very preliminary at this time. Sources say the developer is looking at the site for a possible department store.

Wetmore Township to receive $6,165 for road project

SMETHPORT – Wetmore Township will be receiving $6,165 from McKean County for a road project completed over the summer.
McKean County Commissioners Joe DeMott, Al Pingie and Cliff Lane approved the payment Monday during a meeting at the county courthouse in Smethport.
The payment represents the township’s share of county liquid fuel tax revenue.
The commissioners also made a payment of $5,542 to Ceres Township for a road project funded by the liquid fuel tax revenue.
