Born Dec. 1, 1923 in Sheffield, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Koval Hoden.

HIGHLAND TWP. – A West Virginia man was killed Thursday afternoon when the driver he was traveling with reportedly fell asleep while driving on state Route 66 around 3:30 p.m. in Highland Township.

Camera to provide elk's point of view

BENEZETTE – What does an elk eat?
With footage captured by a tiny video camera placed on a Pennsylvania elk this week, researchers soon will find out.
The research initiative is a product of a partnership between the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the Keystone Elk Country Alliance, a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit organization headquartered at the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette.

Spring bird migrations were excellent this year for any bird lover, and by the time you will be reading this column, will probably be all but done for the year. I’ve had the Rose-breasted grosbeaks, the Baltimore-orioles, White-throated sparrows and a few others pass through my backyard this spring. This made for some great photography and excellent bird watching. The birds are now pretty well settled in their nesting areas and photography opportunities still abound. The only thing I have to be careful of during nesting season is not to disturb any active nests.

Richard H. Danielson, 77, of Mt. Jewett, died Wednesday July 2, 2014 at the Lutheran Home in Kane.
Born in Kane Hospital March 5, 1937, he was the son of Harlan Henry and Alice F. Osbeck Danielson.

Ken Kane resigns from school board

Current Kane Area School Board President Ken Kane became the fourth director to resign from the volunteer board this year when he submitted his letter of resignation earlier this week. Kane, who has served on the Kane Area School District Board of Directors since 1985, joins Mark Paup, Harry Steele and Dave Westerburg in tendering his resignation this year.

Back-to-school drive underway

The 5th Annual Operation Back-to-School Sneakers Socks and Backpacks Drive is underway.
Donations of new sneakers, socks and backpacks may be dropped off at the Kane Area Community Center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. between now and Aug. 1. 
Wondering what gender or size to buy? That easy, any size and gender! Buy what you'd buy for your kid. All sizes from little preschool feet to great big teenager feet are needed. 

Port Allegany woman killed in crash

LIBERTY TWP. – A 40-year-old Port Allegany woman was killed Wednesday morning in a head-on collision on U.S. Route 6 in Liberty Township, McKean County.
According to reports, Melissa L. Stilts, 40, of Port Allegany was operating a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu west on U.S. Route 6 when she reportedly crossed the center line and struck a 2007 Volvo dump truck operated by 73-year-old Richard L. McDowell of Smethport. Both vehicles sustained disabling front end damage.

Kim Frances Willman

Kim Frances Willman, 54, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014.
She was born Sept. 10, 1959, in Casablanca, Morocco. Kim earned three degrees, including a master’s degree from Penn State, Pittsburgh Art Institute and University of NOVA Southeast. She loved gardening and pets and was an avid fan of Penn State athletics, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Although in good health, her early demise was due to the onset of severe Dementia/Alzheimer’s Disease.

Richard “Dick” Danielson, 77, formerly of 124 W. Main St., Mt. Jewett, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. in Mt. Jewett.
