David Okerlund appointed as new Hamlin supervisor

HAZEL HURST – David Okerlund of Marvindale is the new Hamlin Township supervisor.
He fills the vacancy on the three-member Board of Supervisors created by the resignation of Guy Raught of Hazel Hurst.

Danz sentenced in federal court

ERIE – Judge Maurice Cohill sentenced Richard A. Danz, 49, of Matthews, N.C. and formerly of St. Marys, to 46 months in federal prison for embezzling over $400,000 from Elk County Humane Society during his tenure as volunteer treasurer.

Judith "Judy" A. Barner

Judith "Judy" A. Barner, 69, of Van Ettan Avenue, Sheffield, died peacefully while surrounded by her children and following a brief illness on Monday, May 19, 2014 at Warren General Hospital.
Born Oct. 22, 1944, in Kane, she was a daughter of William E. and Dorothy A. Anderson Sleeman. On Oct. 9, 1965, in Sheffield, she married Jack V. Barner, her husband and best friend, whom she had greatly missed since his death in 2009.

Mt. Jewett council plans to sell water system to Aqua

MT. JEWETT – It appears likely that the Mt. Jewett Borough Council will be selling the borough water system to a private company—Aqua Pennsylvania of Bryn Mawr.
Based on discussion at a two-hour council workshop Sunday, council members favor the sale to Aqua.

The primary election Tuesday features a four-way contest for the Democratic nomination for governor, but no local races.
Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and close at 8 p.m.

Mt. Jewett veteran, 87,  finally sees World War II Memorial

MT. JEWETT – Don Warren Sr. of Mt. Jewett still has vivid memories of Japanese Kamikaze attacks on U.S. Navy ships in the Pacific Ocean during World War II.
He was serving aboard the USS Bingham troop transport ship that was taking soldiers to Okinawa for the invasion in 1945.

Highland fire chief wants critics to either inspect records or shut up

Kane girls track team finishes 3rd at District meet

BROOKVILLE – The Kane girls’ track and field team finished third out of 21 teams that competed at Friday’s District 9 AA meet in Brookville. The Kane girls finished with 57 points, behind ECC with 105.5 and Johnsonburg with 103. Two Lady Wolves finished in the top two in their events to advance to next week’s PIAA tournament.

Wolves win 3rd consecutive district title; 8 advancing to states

BROOKVILLE – The Kane boys track and field team won their third straight District 9 AA title on Friday at Brookville. Four Wolves earned the right to compete in individual events next week at the PIAA Tournament in Shippensburg, while two Kane relay teams also placed in the top two to advance to the state meet.
