Chamber to honor Dyne Excavating as Business-of-the-Year

Dyne Excavating for nearly 30 years has stepped forward to support the Kane community and the people who live here.
“We believe strongly in helping others,” Steve Dyne said in stressing the company’s philosophy. “We try to assist families and children we find who are need.”
Dyne Excavating has donated to the Kane Rotary Club, the Kane Area Revitalization Enterprise (KARE), various church organizations, the Kane Fish and Game Club’s trap field and the Kane Little League. The company also has supported numerous fundraisers and events in the Kane Area School District.

Florence A. Gullifer

Florence A. Gullifer, 89, formerly of 230 Birch St., Kane, died late Monday afternoon, Feb. 16, 2015 at Sena Kean Manor in Smethport.
Born May 31, 1925 in Instanter, she was the daughter of Igancs and Josephine Malok Bodistow. On July 5, 1947 in Kane, she married Wilbur D. Gullifer, who died in 2009.
Mrs. Gullifer worked at Stackpole Corp. in Kane for many years, and later was a cook at The Lutheran Home at Kane for eight years.
She was a member of St. Callistus Catholic Church and enjoyed baking.

Kentucky came out and took care of business against one of the SEC cellar dwellers. The Wildcats opened up a 25 point lead before the half was over and then put in in cruise control for the second half. Willie Cauley-Stein led the balanced scoring effort by Kentucky with 14 points.

Kane Chamber Citizen-of-the-Year is ‘hooked’ on art

An unexpected trip to Paris is all it took for Marilyn Blackmore to become “hooked” on art.
As a first-grade teacher at the former Chestnut Elementary School in Kane, Blackmore helped develop art curriculum for the young students. The course included the study of famous artists such as Oscar-Claude Monet, the founder of French impressionist painting.
Seeing her passion for the class, Blackmore’s late husband, Dave surprised her with a summer vacation to Paris.

Dance team excels at Cleveland competition

Nikky’s Dance Studio Competition Team from Smethport attended Revolution Talent Competition this weekend in Cleveland, Ohio. They received seven platinum and five elite gold medals for the twelve dances the preformed.

Kane School Board approves several personnel items

The Kane School Board approved several personnel items at its meeting Thursday at the Kane Middle School auditorium.
In action, the board:
*Named Kelly Peterson to the list of substitute teachers.
*Placed Rochelle Causer on the list of substitute cafeteria workers and list of substitute teacher aides.
*Named Judy Bennett as a substitute van driver.
*Approved volunteers for the school district. They include: Sara Ackley, Karen Kerner, Jen Blankenship, Lisa Grube, Taylor Detrick, Maria Jones and Melanie Selan.

Supporting the fight against texting and driving

Imagine attempting to keep a vehicle safely on the road while driving blindfolded for five seconds at 55 miles per hour. In addition, by this time a driver has covered an area slightly longer than a football field.What may sound like a challenge to some is a risk drivers take every day when reading or sending a text message.
One local business owner is hoping to raise awareness to the dangers of texting and driving through participation in the Red Thumb Reminder project, encouraging drivers to paint their thumb nail red or wear a red band or string around their finger.

The Kane Varsity Cheerleading team kept on in their winning ways at the Champion Cheer Central Red Hot Cheer and Dance Competition in Clarion this past Sunday.

Kane wrestlers excel at Jr. High D9 tournament

The Kane Middle School wrestling team competed at the Junior High District 9 Tournament held Saturday in Brockway.
Three eighth-graders, Aiden Hulings, Noah Blankenship, and Alec English, placed first in the tournament earning a medal and District 9 champion T-shirt.
Also participating were Jake Silvis, James Flemming, Ty Stahli, Teddy Race, Adam Sicher, Dominic Cartwright, Dakota Menteer, Christian Whisner, Lane Hillard, Aiden Hulings, Alec English, Noah Blankenship and Cameron Whisner.

Theodore L. "Ted" Hutchins

Theodore L. "Ted" Hutchins, 68, of 526 Janeway St., died suddenly Sunday morning, Feb. 15, 2015 at Kane Community Hospital.
Born April 11, 1946, in Kane, he was a son of the late John and Mary Zaunick Hutchins. On Nov. 9, 1972, in Kane, he married Jennifer Wilson who survives.
Ted had been employed at SGL Carbon in St. Marys.
