Machinists union striking at Cleveland Brothers

LANTZ CORNERS – The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 66 formed a picket line out front of Cleveland Brother’s Lantz Corners location on Monday morning. The union, representing 275 heavy equipment machinists at eight different locations throughout Western Pennsylvania, said through union spokesperson Josh Bloom that the workers are “striking based upon alleged unfair labor practices by Cleveland Brothers.”

Chester E. Slaugenhaupt

Chester E. Slaugenhaupt, 70, a resident of Sena-Kean Manor and formerly of Mt. Jewett, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013 at UPMC Bradford.
Born Sept. 14, 1942, in Eldred, he was a son of the late Charles and Mildred Pelham Slaugenhaupt. On July 17, 1971, in Mt. Jewett, he married Sylvia Roberts who survives.
Mr. Slaugenhaupt worked as a truck driver and also as a driver for Burdick's Garbage Disposal.
He was a member of the Hazel Hurst United Methodist Church, the Hamlin Township Fire Department and the Mt. Jewett Senior Center.

John H. McNeil

John H. McNeil, 68, of 423 Moffit Ave., passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013, at UPMC Montefiore in Pittsburgh.
Born April 28, 1945, in Southampton, N.Y., he was a son of the late Cleon and Marcia Milgate McNeil. He was married to Clara Jean Brandes McNeil who survives.
Mr. McNeil was a retired employee of Pasco County in Florida
He  was a member of the Kane Revival Center and the Kane Senior Center.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Tracy McNeil of Philadelphia; a brother, Richard McNeil of Portville, N.Y.; and a sister, Kathryn McNeil of Eastport, Long Island, N.Y.

Mrs. Jody Rea Paup Hogan

Mrs. Jody Rea Paup Hogan, 47, of Meherrin, Va. died Saturday July 20, 2013.
Jody was born Aug. 18, 1965 in Kane, daughter of Thora (Lynne) and James (Jim) Paup.
Jody was a 1987 graduate of Longwood College with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Jody worked at Southside Community Hospital for many years before pursuing a career in teaching. She was a teacher at Prince Edward County Middle School, Fuqua, Nottaway and most recently, Lunenburg County High School.

Patricia A. Allegretto

Patricia A. Allegretto, 71, died Friday, July 12, 2013 at the home of her daughter in Newton, Kan.
Born Sept. 28, 1942, in Roscoe, N.Y., she was a daughter of Hirman and Mary A. Hannold VanGuilder.
Patricia had lived in the Kane area for over 40 years. She had operated the Clarion Kitchen in Wilcox and the Sheffield Diner in Sheffield.

St. Marys Little League Softball senior league all stars win state crown

The St. Marys Little League Softball senior league all stars defeated Plains 4-3 Monday afternoon to win the state championship at Ber-Vaughn Park in Berwick.

The Kane Fish and Game Club hosted a Women's Pistol Class on Saturday. Lynn Buhl of Kane is shown taking aim at a target after completing the classroom portion of the class. Sixteen women took part in the event.

SPCA Calendar Contest

Father Philip Pinczewski is pictured putting a dollar in the fundraiser for the McKean County SPCA. Father Phil's cat Felix is one of the 50 pets vying for one of the 12 coveted spots on the 2014 SPCA calendar. The only voting outlet in Kane is located at Northwest Savings Bank's Fraley Street office.

Studio K Elites win at national dance competition

During a hot weekend in Virginia Beach, the Studio K Elite Competition Team set the stage on fire with their talent. Bringing home 11 trophies, including eight first-place wins, the Studio K Elites represented McKean and Elk County with pride. Team members range in age from 10 through 18 and come from Kane, St. Marys and Wilcox.

Chester Slaugenhaupt, 70, died Sunday morning at the Bradford Regional Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc.
