The Kane Tornado 10-11-year-olds claimed the South Division Championship and advanced to the Olean Youth Football League Championship Game by defeating an undefeated Coudersport squad by a 12-0 count Saturday at Coudersport.
Rain, wind, cold and tough defense were the order of the day for almost the entire first half as neither team could reach the end zone.
The 13th Annual Steve Jerman Memorial 5K run and 2 mile walk was held Saturday October 15, 2011 at Kane. A total of 141 participants were on hand. With 52 registered
walkers and 89 runners making their way through the very tough weather conditions with constant winds and rain.
Finishing first overall were Taylor Beimel from Kane and Avery Colson and Christ Hunt also from Kane.
The boys soccer team came out inspired and ready to play against a good Coudersport team that beat them earlier in the year 5-0 but ended up with a 2-1 loss Monday against the Falcons.
Both teams found the footing very tough as several players were slipping and unable to get good control of the ball. The visiting Falcons would strike first with 21:10 left in the first half. They would take the one-goal lead into halftime.
Leanna L. Penhollow, 80, formerly of 424 Winsor St. and 110 W. Third St. in Jamestown, N.Y., died at 4:20 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, in WCA Hospital.
An area resident for almost 40 years, she was born July 28, 1931 in Sergeant, a daughter of the late Paul and Leota Smith McMahon.
She had attended Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.
HAZEL HURST – The Hamlin Township Board of Supervisors is considering the addition of a tax on persons who work at jobs in the township.
The Local Services Tax (LST)—formerly known as the Emergency Municipal Services (EMS) tax—is allowed under state law and is assessed by several area municipalities.
The maximum tax permitted by law is $52 a year-- $1 per week.
Those earning $12,000 or less a year can apply for a full tax refund.
The proposed tax would not affect retired persons living in the township.

In the opening match of the round robin, the Kane Lady Wolves swept Smethport 25-18 and 25-13.
“Smethport kept the ball moving a lot and they dug up a lot of what we hit," Kane head girls varsity volleyball coach Judy Kessler. "They are pretty steady, but we served aggressively and hit smartly so we got a lot of points that way.”
AmeriCorps—called “a domestic Peace Corps”—has assigned three local women to tutor and mentor students in the Kane Area School District.
The three include:
*Kathleen Prosperi of Kane, who is based at the high school.
*Ashley Mix of Mt. Jewett, who is assigned to the elementary school.
*Kathy Long of Kane, who works with students at the middle school and elementary schools.
“All three are full-time AmeriCorps volunteers,” Dr. Maryann Anderson, Kane school superintendent, said. “It’s a wonderful program.”
Nellie J. Himes, 87, of 207 Irishtown Road, Kersey, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 at her residence.
She was born April 4, 1924, in Kane, daughter of the late Charles W. and Mary Merle Brown Hepler.
On May 27, 1942, in Kane, she married Harry A. Himes Sr., who survives.
She had lived in the area for the past 69 years and attended Kane schools. She attended the Faith Baptist Church and enjoyed camping, canning and baking, reading her Bible and spending time with her family.
JOHNSONBURG – The visiting Kane Wolves (4-3) rode the momentum of four touchdowns Friday night from junior running back Jonah Smith to drop winless Johnsonburg (0-7), 42-7.
After a tight 7-7 game in the first quarter which saw Smith score his first touchdown of the night, Kane mounted a furious offensive attack to score four times in just under six minutes in the second quarter.
Shirlee M. Salberg, 84, of 1939 Montmorenci Rd., Ridgway, died unexpectedly at her residence on Friday.
She was born Dec. 13, 1926 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Henry and Emma (Mader) Markert. She married Ray H. Salberg on June 18, 1949, and he preceded her in death on June 23, 2002.
