Michael J. Kennedy, 19, of 641 East Center St., Johnsonburg, died early Sunday morning as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Kane. Arrangements, under the care of the Ronald McDonald II Funeral Home, Inc. in Kane, are incomplete and will be announced in tomorrow's edition.

Two Johnsonburg residents killed in early morning crash Sunday

WETMORE TWP. – Two Johnsonburg residents were killed and two juveniles injured in a two-vehicle head-on collision that occurred just after midnight on Sunday in McKean County.

Teen Queen for Swedish Festival

The Teen Queen was crowned Sunday at the closing ceremony for the annual Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival. The group includes, left to right: Haley Williams, first runner-up; Brynn Howard, the 2013 Teen Queen; Maya Huckabone, the 2012 Teen Queen; and Ally Carpenter, coordinator for the Teen Queen Contest. Howard is the 13-year-old daughter of Ted and Karen Howard.

Gertrude F. Anderson, age 93, formerly of Harrison Township, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013 at 8:05 p.m. at The Lutheran Home in Kane.
She was born on her mother's birthday on Maple Street in Natrona Heights on July 14, 1920, daughter of Henry and Pearl Buzzard Sherrieb. She resided in the Harrison Township area for 90 years and had lived at The Lutheran Home of Kane since 2011.
She was a graduate of Har-Brack High School in 1939 and worked as an operator for Bell Telephone, and as a homemaker.

Kane native Sarah Hall didn’t have far to look to find motivation for her niche in life.
“Growing up with the beautiful Allegheny National Forest as my backyard is what inspired me to follow my passion for nature,” Hall said. “I knew I wanted to help conserve forests and now that’s what I get to do everyday for a living.”

Kane Senior Center welcomes Major Katie Yancosek

Members of the Kane Senior Center have spent much of the last year writing letters, sending packages and praying for Kane native Major Katie Yancosek, who was stationed in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army until recently.

Katherine Wenk “Kay” Christoffers, 91, of State College and Atlantis, Fla., died Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at the Hospice of Palm Beach County, Atlantis, Fla.
Born Jan. 29, 1922, in Philadelphia, Kay was the only child of Lora Ethel Heim Wenk and Karl Edward Wenk of Kane.
She attended Kane High School and Arlington Hall Junior College, and graduated from Connecticut College for Women in 1945 with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.

Janet Rose Shelander, age 74, of Duffy Apartments, Johnsonburg, died at home Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013 after a brief illness.
She was born June 17, 1939 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Edward and Stella (Kinny) Shelander.
She attended Johnsonburg schools and worked at Stackpole Carbon of Johnsonburg and St. Marys, Elcam, and the Deli of Johnsonburg Market Basket/Jubilee.
