Margaret F. Dean

November 17, 2013

Margaret F. Dean, 85, formerly of James City, died Sunday morning, Nov. 17, 2013 at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born May 2, 1928, in Highland, she was a daughter of  Samuel and Fena Bell Oyler. On April 26, 1947, in Clarion, she married John G. Dean Sr. who preceded her in death.

Wolves season comes to an end against Gremlins

CLARION – The 2013 Kane Wolves’ season came to an abrupt halt on Friday night at Clarion University. For the second straight season, the Karns City Gremlins defeated the Wolves in the District 9 AA Championship game, this time by a 49-21 score.
The Wolves had not lost a game since last Nov. 16 when the Gremlins scored in the final seconds of last year’s title contest to take the crown. Kane had reeled off 11 straight wins to begin the season, becoming only the third undefeated team in Wolves’ history.

Lantz Corners sewer project is 30 percent complete

HAZEL HURST – Installation of sewer lines is well underway for the long-awaited Lantz Corners sewer district in the western end of Hamlin Township.
In a report to the township Board of Supervisors earlier this week, project engineer Dan Slagle said work on the sewage collection system is about 30 percent complete.

Stephanic proceeds to trial in shooting death of girlfriend

Following a Friday morning preliminary hearing Michael J. Stephanic Jr., 44, of St. Marys, will be held over for trial on charges he allegedly shot and killed June Talmadge, 48, during a Sept. 3 incident in the parking lot of Eastern Sintered Alloys.

Lane named as new PACD board member

SMETHPORT – Commissioner Cliff Lane of Turtlepoint, McKean County, recently added the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts (PACD) to his resume. Lane joined the group as the Northwest Region Director of the statewide association earlier this month.

Kay L. Lindquist, 78, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at Pleasant Ridge Manor West.
She was born in Kane on Oct. 18, 1935, the daughter of the late George K. and Pearl L. Thompson Lamper.
She attended school in Jamestown and was a licensed beautician.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Glenn E. Lamper, Clinton C. Lamper, Claire Lamper, Ernest Lamper and George D. Lamper; and three sisters, Marie Arnold, Lucille Morris and Faye Ingersoll.

Wolves look for better ending in rematch with Karns City

The 2012 Kane Wolves football season came to a heartbreaking end with last year’s 33-27 loss to Karns City in the District 9 AA Championship game. Gremlins’ quarterback Tyler Kepple completed a 9-yard pass to Dakota Mohney for the go ahead touchdown with 12 seconds left on the clock. The Wolves had rallied after a first half injury to running back Jonah Smith to take the lead with 3:29 left in the game, but coach Ed Conto’s team drove 65 yards on 15 plays to put an end to Kane’s season.

7 members named for school planning group

No one hurt in smoky fire at Chinese restaurant

No one was injured Wednesday evening in a smoky fire at the Peking Wok Chinese restaurant at 79 Fraley St. in uptown Kane.
Kane Fire Chief Tim Holt said the fire erupted in a ballast for a florescent light. This light is used for backlighting for a large Chinese landscape picture on the wall of the restaurant.

Proposed Highland Twp. budget shows no tax hike

JAMES CITY –The proposed Highland Township budget for 2014 shows no increase in property taxes.
Highland supervisors Paul Burton Sr. and Jim Wolfe agreed Wednesday to adopt the tentative budget that will be on public display at the township office. The supervisors are expected to adopt a final budget at their meeting Dec. 11 at the township building in James City.
