Rams down Wolves on the diamond

The Kane Wolves hosted the Johnsonburg Rams for a baseball game at Pat Santilli Field on Thursday afternoon. The Rams jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and held off a Kane comeback to post a 12-6 win.

Tom Aiello of Kane ends long career as firefighter instructor

Tom Aiello of Kane is proud of his legacy.
By taking part in training classes taught by Aiello, thousands of volunteer firefighters across Pennsylvania and nearby states have learned the proper techniques for fighting structure fires.
Aiello, a longtime volunteer firefighter himself, has been a state-certified fire instructor since 1969. He is retiring with the title of senior master instructor-- the highest level given in the state. He now is referred to as fire instructor emeritus.

Kane High School has its first 2 honor students at CTC

PORT ALLEGANY – Two students from Kane High School have qualified for the Honor Society at the Career and Technical Center (CTC) in Port Allegany.
The Kane honorees are Austin Howe, a junior, and Mike Butterfield, a senior.
They are the first Kane High School participants in the CTC to earn honors at the facility. This is the second year Kane has sent students to the CTC.
The CTC is operated by the Seneca Highlands Intermediate Unit 9 (IU-9)-- a consortium of area school districts.

Spring cleanup along U.S. Route 6

The Mount Jewett Rotary Club teamed up with Mt. Jewett Boy Scout Troop 410 and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for their spring cleanup along U.S. Route 6 between Mt. Jewett and Hazel Hurst. This area along Route 6 is also part of the Upper Allegheny Watershed. The group collected dozens of bags of trash along with many larger items.

More volunteers are needed for 5th KARE For Kane Day

More volunteers are needed for the fifth annual KARE For Kane Day to be held Friday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The event is sponsored by the Kane Area Revitalization Enterprise (KARE), which is part of the Kane Area Development Center (KADC) along with the Kane Chamber of Commerce and the Kane Area Industrial Development Corporation.
Contact the Chamber 837-6565 or sign up at the Chamber office at 54 Fraley St. in Kane.
KARE for Kane matches volunteers from the Kane community with beautification, restoration and other community-based projects.

STEPS offers safe haven for mental health patients

SMETHPORT – Kane area residents who receive mental health services are encouraged to visit the STEPS Drop-in Center in Bradford.
STEPS provides a safe atmosphere where mental health patients can mingle and enjoy activities such as pool, crafts, painting and other games. They also can simply socialize in a relaxed setting. Low-cost meals are served.
New members are welcome.
"There isn't a week goes by when we won't get new members," Maggie Travis said. "We embrace visitors and want them to relax and enjoy our program."

County OKs grant money for Mt. Jewett project

SMETHPORT – A state grant will help cover the cost of design guidelines for the development of Main Street property in Mt. Jewett.
Acting at a meeting Tuesday, the McKean County Board of Commissioners voted 2-0 to endorse a budget of $13,000 for the design.
The project budget includes a $6,500 Municipal Assistance Program (MAP) grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED).

Land restoration to begin in Lantz Corners Sewer District

April 27, 2015

Property restoration work will begin soon for residents in the Lantz Corners Sewer District.
Dave Roman Contracting, which installed the main sewage collection lines in the district, plans to return to the area to level dirt piles and plant grass to restore properties disturbed by the project.
Residents looking for contractor restoration work on their properties are urged to contact the Hamlin Township office at 778-5855. A list of restoration sites is being compiled for submission to the contractor.

Kane seniors reflect on their trip to Washington, D.C.

It's a Kane tradition.
Every year, members of the senior class at Kane Area High School travel by coach buses to Washington, D.C. for a four-day trip.
The students and chaperones are busy tourists as they go from one attraction to another at the nation's Capitol.
The students, who take part in fundraisers to pay for the excursion, have fond memories of their Senior Trip earlier this month.
"I liked the Washington Monument," Brandon Cleer said in reflecting on the Senior Trip. "It was really impressive."

DCC takes doubleheader from Lady Wolves

The Kane softball team hosted DuBois Central Catholic for a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Flickerwood Field. The Lady Wolves came into the game with a 1-0 record four weeks into the season due to postponements and cancelled games. Coach Judy Kessler’s squad was understandably rusty as they took the field against the Lady Cardinals on a windy, cold and sometimes rainy afternoon.
