Crusader cross country squad falls to Kane 23-32

The Elk County Catholic Crusader cross country squad opened their dual meet season with a 23-32 loss to the visiting Kane Wolves on Tuesday afternoon at Benzinger Park. The Lady Crusaders ran unopposed as Kane did not have enough runners to field a team.

George L. McCloskey

George L. McCloskey, 83, of 159 W. Main St., Mt. Jewett, passed away early Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 at Sena-Kean Manor.
Born April 16, 1930, in Snow Shoe, he was a son of the late Lester and Olive McCracken McCloskey. On Oct. 3, 1952, in Hazel Hurst, he married Marilyn Smith who preceded him in death. For most of his life, Mr. McCloskey was a logger and retired from Penn Mountain Logging in 2005 at the age of 75. His favorite pastime was repairing small engines.

St. Marys man dies after being struck by SUV

FOX TWP. – A 50-year-old St. Marys man died late Monday night after being hit by an SUV on state Route 255, according to police reports.
Edward Joshnik reported walked onto SR 255 near Laurel Run Road shortly after 11 p.m. Monday and was struck by a Ford Escape.
He was later pronounced dead at Elk Regional Health center.
Police said the driver of the SUV will not be charged.

Woman killed at Eastern Sintered Alloys

ST. MARYS – St. Marys City Police report arresting 44-year-old Michael J. Stephanic following the death of 48-year-old June Talmadge, also known as June Andrus.
Stephanic, of St. Marys, has reportedly been arraigned on charges of criminal homicide and aggravated assault, and has been remanded to the Elk County Prison.
The incident reportedly took place early Tuesday morning at 2:40 a.m. at Eastern Sintered Alloys at 126 Access Rd.
The investigation is continuing.

Wolves dominate Wolverines in season opener

SHEFFIELD – The Kane Wolves football team opened up the 2013 season with a convincing 34-6 win over the Sheffield Wolverines in Sheffield on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves offense used a balanced attack while the defense forced five Wolverine turnovers on a hot and humid afternoon.

Kane boy, cousin among 6 killed in Rt. 219 crash

Six-year-old Jarrett Costanzo idolized his older brothers Angelo and Jacob and looked forward to the day that he, too, could play youth football.
Meanwhile, he was happy to be on the sidelines as the spirited "water boy."
His 12-year-old cousin Olivia Douglas, a Kane native who lived with her father in Eldred, was a vibrant young girl who was a cheerleader with the Little Nippers youth football program for Otto-Eldred. 

School 'crisis team' is ready to assist students

The Kane School District "crisis team" is ready to assist students today in the wake of a tragedy that killed a Kane student and his cousin.
Jarrett Costanzo, a 6-year-old Kane kindergarten student, and his 12-year-old cousin Olivia Douglas died Saturday in a horrific two-car traffic accident on Route 219. 

Fate of Kane police chief remains in limbo

The fate of Kane Police Chief Brian Hillard remains cloudy today as he faces criminal charges filed by the state Attorney General's office.

Jack D. Safreed, 87, of 14 Oberg Ave., Mt. Jewett, passed away Friday, August 30, 2013 at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born Oct. 27, 1925, in Beaver Falls, he was a son of John and Laura Best Safreed. On Aug. 13, 1983, at Lake Tahoe, he married Patricia Dinsmore who survives.
Mr. Safreed was employed by  the Bechtel Company and was a millwright by trade. His work consisted mainly of building nuclear power plants.

David E. Meckley

David E. Meckley, 46, of 130 Greeves St., Kane, formerly of Lamont, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 in the Intensive Care Unit at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born Aug. 29, 1967 in Kane, he was the son of Robert G. and Rebecca E. Campbell Meckley.
A graduate of Kane Area High School, David lived most of his life in Kane. Prior to his illness, he was a caregiver for Concerned Care in Kansas City, Mo., and had volunteered for many years at The Lutheran Home at Kane. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Kane.
