Alan Simchick of Johnsonburg is the winner of a Henry Rifle, a prize given in a fundraiser for the Staff Sgt. Kenneth R. VanGiesen Patriot Award in Kane.
The award goes each commencement to Kane High School graduates who are entering the military service. The award honors VanGiesen, a Kane native who was killed in Afghanistan while serving with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Don L. Blauser, 56, of 15 School St. in East Kane, died early Friday morning, Dec. 13, 2013 at his residence.
Born Nov. 27, 1957 in Kane, he was the son of William A. and Hazel B. Slagle Blauser.Â On Nov. 27, 1982 in Kane, he married Amy E. Park, who survives.
Mr. Blauser worked at Kane Magnetics for 27 years, and enjoyed watching sports.

Born Jan. 8, 1927, in Ludlow, he was a son of the late Stephen and Katherine Patilla Straneva.Â On Dec. 3, 1960, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Sheffield, he married Patrika M. Erikson who survives.
During World War II, Mr. StranevaÂ served in the Merchant Marines. After 50 years of service, he retired as a foremanÂ from National Forge.
Helen K. Micheau, 89, ofÂ 108 Wetmore Ave., Kane, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at Warren Manor in Warren.
Born April 6, 1924, in Kane, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Verna Tussey Wade.Â On Jan. 5, 1946, in Kane, she married Clarence W. Micheau who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Micheau, a graduate of the Kane High School,Â class of 1942,Â was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she belonged to the United Methodist Women, the Joanna Circle, and served as a trustee.Â She also was a member of the choir for 40 years.
JAMES CITY â€“A move is underway to try and strip the state pension from Charlie Vaughn, the Highland Township roadmaster and former supervisor.
Supervisor Paul Burton Sr. said Wednesday that an inquiry about the pension for Vaughn has been sent to David Pontzer.Â
