Jack D. Safreed, 87, of 14 Oberg Ave., Mt. Jewett, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Cummings Funeral Home, Inc. in Mt. Jewett.
JAMES CITY â€“ A lone candidate will appear on the ballot Nov. 5 to fill the remaining two years in the term of former Highland Township Supervisor Charlie Vaughn.
According to Kim Frey, director of the Elk County Board of Elections, Glen Hulings of James City will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot as a Democratic candidate for a two-year term. A Republican candidate will not be listed on the ballot for a two-year term, Frey said.
Kane volleyball coach Judy Kessler has seen nearly everything in her 20-plus years of coaching the Lady Wolves. While she and assistant coach Rae El Johnson have a few key returning players, the 2013 squad is loaded with some talented young players. Coach Kessler gives the following outlook for the season.
The Kane Marching Band is under the direction of Matthew McClard. Assistant directors are Henry Sobieski and Joe Thornburg. The Color Guard Director is Kathleen Prosperi.
Last yearâ€™s Kane girlsâ€™ soccer team struggled at times due to low numbers on the team after some key injuries left the team playing shorthanded a number of games. Despite the thin bench, the 2012 team played hard from whistle to whistle. This year, the team will have 18 players on the roster, including nine returning letter winners and seven seniors.
While Kane golf coach Nathan Smith lost â€śthe best golfer I ever coached, Kyla Hoagâ€ť to graduation, donâ€™t feel too sorry for him. The cupboard isnâ€™t empty for the girlsâ€™ team, as Smith has four golfers ready to kick off their senior seasons. Three other golfers round out the 2013 squad for Smith and assistant coach Jason Holt.
The 2012 Kane Wolves Football team came up just 12 seconds short of a District 9 title in coach Todd Silfies's first year at the helm. The Wolves finished the season with a 7-4 record.
The Wolves' coaching staff must find a few replacements for some key departing seniors. Coach Silfies is hesitant to use the word â€śreplace,â€ť insisting that this is â€śa new year, a new team and will have a new look.â€ť While there will be a number of new faces in key positions, Silfies does have 12 returning letter winners.
Kane cross country coach Adam Smelko is eagerly awaiting the 2013 season. Team members have logged a lot of miles over the summer training for this season. Coach Smelko feels that this year, the Kane boysâ€™ team has â€śboth quality and quantity.â€ť
The Kane cheerleading teams recently completed our camp and started our regular season practices.
The fall season consists of the Kane Area High School varsity cheerleaders and the Kane Area Middle School cheerleaders.
The Kane boysâ€™ soccer team struggled last year, a young team playing against some of the best soccer players District 9 has ever seen. Kane Coach Ernie Chamberlainâ€™s squad battled through a long season and only lost one senior to graduation. Most of the players are back a year bigger, stronger and quicker and ready to get some wins under their belts.
