Probe continues in hit-run fatal accident

SMETHPORT – The investigation continues into a hit-and-run accident that killed a Cyclone man on his motorcycle.
McKean County District Attorney Ray Learn said Friday that "persons of interest" are part of the investigation. He declined to elaborate.
No arrests had been made as of Friday afternoon, Learn said.
Police have recovered a silver Ford R-350 pickup truck that allegedly struck the rear of a Harley Davidson motorcycle at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 2.

Celebration honors new state champions

The Elk County Catholic High School Lady Crusader softball team was welcomed home Friday night by a parade of emergency response vehicles that led them on a parade through town with their sirens blaring and lights flashing. When the newly-crowned state champions finally reached ECCHS, a number of supporters were waiting for them.
After an extended celebration in the parking lot that featured lots of hugs, congratulatory remarks, and the release of a few maroon and gold balloons, the group moved into the school's auditorium for a brief ceremony.

Lady Crusader softball wins PIAA Class A Championship

UNIVERSITY PARK — STATE CHAMPS.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader softball team captured the 2015 PIAA Class A Softball championship Friday afternoon at Beard Field at Nittany Lion Softball Park on the campus of Penn State University by defeating the Conemaugh Valley Lady Blue Jays 7-0.
Abbey Bauer threw a no-hitter for Elk Catholic. She went all seven innings walking two, hitting one and striking out five.
"Abbey (Bauer) threw a great game and the defense behind her played extremely well," said ECCHS coach Digger O'Dell.

Final school budget with deficit carries tax rate hike

The final Kane school budget shows more expenses than revenues and carries a hike in the property tax rate.
The tax rate for property in the McKean County portion of the school district is rising from 16.17 mills to 16.56 mills.
This means owners of property in Kane, Wetmore Township, Mt. Jewett and Hamilton Township (Ludlow) will be paying $16.56 for every $1,000 in assessed property valuation.

School retirees present 2 awards in Kane

The Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) has honored two Kane longtime school employees for outstanding service.
Julie W. Boyer, a first-grade teacher at the Kane Elementary School, and Dora Gelatko, a para-professional, are the recipients of the PASR Lauretta Woodson Award.
Debbie Wensel, a retired Kane teacher and member of the PASR, presented the awards Thursday at a meeting of the Kane School Board in the Kane Middle School auditorium.

Highland Township facing crisis for insurance coverage

JAMES CITY – The operation of the Highland Township government could shut down unless new insurance can be found within three weeks.
According to discussion Wednesday at a meeting of the township Board of Supervisors, Highland officials have tried in vain to find a new insurance carrier. The current policy with Trident Insurance expires July 3 and won't be renewed.
Secretary-treasurer Christy Reigel reportedly has contacted eight insurance sources to seek coverage. All have turned down the township.
"I tried everybody," Reigel said during the somber discussion.

Promotion underway for 'Wings Over Bradford'

LAFAYETTE TOWNSHIP – Efforts are well underway to promote "Wings Over Bradford."
The "aviation awareness day" will be held Saturday, Aug. 8 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bradford Regional Airport on Route 59 in Lafayette Township.
Speaking Wednesday at a meeting of the Airport Authority, Jim Neely said the "fun day" is designed to build local support for general aviation at the airport. The event is planned "rain or shine," Neely said.
Neely, a retired game warden who resides on Wetmore Road in Hamilton Township near Kane, is the coordinator for "Wings Over Bradford."

Vacation Bible School is winding up today

The Kane Community Vacation Bible School winds up today with a program at the Highlander Christian Camp on South Settlement Road in Wetmore Township.
Jim Airgood Busing of Kane is providing transportation for those children who need rides to the camp.
A total of 135 children are taking part in the Vacation Bible School (VBS), which began Monday. VBS is for children age four through those who just completed fifth grade.

Martin sentenced to life in prison

RIDGWAY – Convicted murderer Nicholas Martin was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday at the Elk County Courthouse after a jury of his peers found him guilty of the 2013 killing of his then girlfriend Alyssa Forsyth.
The sentence was expected; Martin's conviction of first-degree murder carried with it a mandatory life sentence.
President Judge Richard A. Masson had no choice in sentencing Martin to life in prison, but he added that the court had no reluctance to imposing the sentence of life in prison.

Sun Air nears target with cheap flights to Pittsburgh

LAFAYETTE TOWNSHIP – Sun Air Express is attracting more passengers for its cheap daily flights between the Bradford Regional Airport and the Pittsburgh International Airport.
For just $29, Kane area residents can fly from the local airport on Route 39 in Lafayette Township to Pittsburgh.
With free parking at the local airport, the 55-minute flight is a quick and inexpensive way to travel to Pittsburgh.
Sun Air Bradford Station Manager Ryan Dach gave a rosy report Wednesday to the Airport Authority at its meeting at the airport.
