Donations roll in for skate/bike park repairs

Donations have been rolling in to help cover the cost of repairs at the skate/bike facility at Glenwood Park in Kane.
More than $4,000 has been raised so far for the work at the wooden ramps. 
Until work is completed and the facility passes inspection by an insurance representative, the borough continues to mark the skate/bike ramps off limits to riders.
Two events to assist the skate/bike park are set for today. Demonstrations and music will be featured at the site from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

‘Test drives’ Saturday to benefit Kane High students

There might not be an easier way to raise money for student groups at Kane Area High School.
The Ford Motor Company will donate $20 for every person who goes behind the wheel Saturday and “test drives” a new Ford vehicle. In addition, the company will donate a “bonus” of $10 for every “test drive” in a 2013 Ford Escape.
Ford will donate up to $8,000 under the program to benefit the “Hurri-Kane” school yearbook, the Class of 2014 (juniors), the Class of 2015 (sophomores) and the Kane chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).

Career, College Night is a big success in Kane

It was a successful first Career and College Night at Kane Area High School.
The event, which was held Wednesday evening in conjunction with open house at the school, gave parents and students a chance to visit with representatives from colleges, industry and the military services.
"It was really a good idea," Phillip Carlson of Mt. Jewett said in commenting on the program in the school gymnasium. "It gives parents the chance to go from table to table to see what's available for their children."

Former firefighter charged with arson

ST. MARYS - A former member of the Crystal Fire Department was arraigned Wednesday before District Judge Mark Jacob on charges including arson and related offenses, insurance fraud, criminal mischief, and recklessly endangering another person, in connection with a July 9 fire involving a camper parked in the driveway of his North St. Marys Street residence.

Alice Anderson Wahlburg Nevel

Alice Anderson Wahlburg Nevel, age 87, of Conneautville, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012 at Rolling Fields Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 13, 1925 in Kane to George R. and Carrie Zelvina Hathaway Anderson.
She was formerly married to Neil Wahlburg; and then married Bernard A. Nevel, they both preceded her in death.
A 1943 graduate of Kane Area High School, she was a housewife and was formerly employed by Quality Market in Kane. She had attended the Presbyterian churck in Kane.

Lady Wolves lose to Bradford in five games

The Kane Lady Wolves pushed the undefeated Bradford Lady Owls to the limit on Tuesday night in the Wolves’ Den. Kane came up on the short end of the five-game match, 25-18, 22-25, 19-25, 25-11, 15-12.
Bradford jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one before the Lady Wolves rallied behind the serving of Nikki Sicher and the net play of Kaila Jamerson and Taylor Morgan, and led 7-4 before Bradford fought back. The visitors scored 11 of the next 15 points to regain the lead. The Lady Owls finished the game off with the help of a few serve reception errors by Kane.

County seeks grant to aid shelter for homeless

SMETHPORT – At a time when hand-held electronic devices wide-screen TVs are common in many households, McKean County still has homeless people who sleep in cars or tents in the woods.
The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Bradford handles this homeless crisis for the county.
For the year ending June 30, the YWCA provided temporary housing for 75 women and 42 children at its shelter on the second floor of its building on West Corydon Street.

County approves aid for Kane paving project

SMETHPORT – County liquid fuel tax revenue will help Kane cover the cost of its summer street-paving project.
Acting at a meeting Tuesday, the McKean County Board of Commissioners allocated $7,562 in liquid fuel tax revenue to Kane.
The money will help Kane pay for the cost of paving sections of Chase, Welsh, Maple and Clay streets and Elk Avenue. IA Construction of Franklin paved the streets under a contract for $97,555.20, according to Kane borough office manager Lori Feldbauer.

Taylor Detrick carries on family's athletic tradition

Being a high school athlete takes a tremendous amount of time, effort and determination.
Being a female athlete in a male-dominated sport takes even more of a commitment. There have been a few girls in the history of Kane athletics to wrestle or go out for football, but only Taylor Detrick has played the entire way from middle school through her senior year.
Taylor, the daughter of Jim and Chris Detrick, has been playing organized football since she was a Kane Tornado at nine years old.
Taylor said she never considered not playing, she simply loves football.

Thomas E. Lachner died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012. He was born April 7, 1944. Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ronald McDonald Funeral Home in Marienville. Rev. Dan Richter will preside. Burial will be in Guitonville Cemetery.
