Vacant houses damaged in Johnsonburg arson

JOHNSONBURG – Following an investigation into Wednesday's Harrison Avenue fire, Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Corporal Greg Agosti reported that the fire was the result of arson.
The fire, which damaged three vacant houses along Harrison Avenue, started at approximately 2:30 a.m., and firefighters did not finish leaving the scene until 10:30 a.m.
According to Agosti's investigation, the fire started at the house located at 112 Harrison Ave., and the fire then spread to the adjacent properties at 110 and 114 Harrison Ave.

Hamilton Township Veterans Memorial is dedicated

LUDLOW – Bill Blauser of Ludlow has said a lot of prayers in his lifetime.
They've all been answered.
A military veteran, he prayed when he was wounded while serving aboard an U.S. Navy patrol boat in a Vietnam jungle.
As commander of the American Legion Post 489 in Ludlow, he prayed that sufficient donations would be raised for his dream-- a memorial to Hamilton Township veterans.
And Tuesday-- Veterans Day-- Blauser prayed for good weather for the dedication of the memorial at the back gate of Wildcat Park near Ludlow.

Aqua submits bid for Mt. Jewett sewer system

MT. JEWETT – Aqua Pennsylvania has purchased the Mt. Jewett water system and will soon take over its operation.
Now the Bryn Mawr-based company wants to buy the Mt. Jewett sewage system.
Aqua has submitted a bid of $1.1 million for the "assets" of the Mt. Jewett Regional Sewer Authority.
The authority opened the bid Tuesday at its meeting at the borough building.
It was the only bid received by the deadline for proposals. In a letter, Pennsylvania American Water said "we respectively decline to submit a bid at this time."

Kane Borough Council hires new borough manager

The Kane Borough Council hired Wetmore Township resident Don Payne as its new borough manager.
Council President Howard Kane and Councilwoman Holly Harris announced the hiring Tuesday at the Kane Borough office along Bayard Street. The position had been vacant since the 2010 retirement of Pat Nuzzo. Members of the Kane Borough Council at that time decided not to fill the position as a cost-saving move.

Local Mason Lodge holds Vets Day service at Kane VFW

Kane Masonic Lodge #566 held a service honoring all veterans and active duty service members on Tuesday night at King David Post 1132 VFW. Mason Dan Jordan welcomed those in attendance to the first of what they hope will be an annual Veterans’ Recognition service. Masons Jordan, Rich Duffy and Angelo Lopez detailed the long history of United States servicemen and summed up the evening with a quote, “America owes a great debt of gratitude to our veterans.”

Kane High School Holds Veterans’ Day Program

For the first time in recent memory, the Kane Area High School held a program on Monday afternoon in observance of Veterans Day. The program, organized by teacher Lori Lewis, included a member of the KHS faculty, as well as several local veterans.
KHS English teacher Josh Jekeliek, who is also a member of the Coast Guard Reserve, took the podium after the Kane Marching Band played “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. Jekeliek began his portion of the program by repeating a quote that is engraved on the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C.

County planners OK Country Fair store in Kane

SMETHPORT – The McKean County Planning Commission gave tentative approval Monday to the building of a Country Fair store in Kane. Dick Kallenborn conducted the meeting in the absence of Board Chairman Tony Clarke at the County 911 Center near Smethport.
The commission welcomed its new planning director, Jeremy Morey. Morey is a Roulette native and resident and formerly worked for the county probation office. Also attending his first meeting was newly-appointed commissioner Ron Keim of Kushequa.

New planner is appointed for McKean County

SMETHPORT – Jeremy S. Morey of Roulette is the new planner for McKean County.
His appointment was announced Monday at a meeting of the county Board of Commissioners at the county courthouse.
Morey is a 2005 graduate of Port Allegany High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society.
Morey graduated in 2009 from Mansfield University with a degree in history. His minor was in psychology.
He is president of the Roulette Alumni Association.

Proposed Kane budget carries slight tax increase

The proposed Kane borough budget for 2015 carries a half-mill increase in the tax rate.
The Kane Borough Council voted 5-2 Monday to adopt the tentative budget, which will be display at the borough building as of Wednesday. Council is expected to vote on a final budget at its next meeting Monday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m. at the borough building.
Council President Howard Kane joined with Councilwomen Janet Bard and Holly Harris and Councilmen Dennis Drost and Tom Kase in approving the proposed budget. 

Mt. Jewett budget plan calls for cut in police hours

MT. JEWETT – A Mt. Jewett budget plan unveiled Monday calls for reducing the weekly hours for Police Chief Steve Hale from 40 to 30.
Several residents told the Mt. Jewett Borough Council they are not in favor of having a reduced police presence.
"Less police is not a good thing," one woman told council.
