Mt. Jewett woman wins appeal in child-spanking case

MT. JEWETT – It's OK to discipline a child by spanking as long as the corporal punishment doesn't rise to the level of abuse.
This is the basis of a ruling handed down earlier this year by a state Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) to sustain an appeal filed by a Mt. Jewett woman.
The appeal was filed against the McKean County Children and Youth Services (CYS) agency and the county Department of Human Services.

State legislators discuss budget issues at AHUG dinner

KERSEY – The Allegheny Hardwood Utilization Group (AHUG) held its annual dinner Thursday which featured a legislative panel discussion with some of the area's various state legislators.
The panel discussion featured a question-and-answer section that focused strongly on the upcoming state budget and how it will impact the timber industry.
The first question that was asked of the legislators was a request to know where the state's budget process currently sits.

Memories of a World War II Army Nurse

Carolyn (Peg) Hoffman Coulter, 92 of Kane was recently interviewed by Steve Appleby, director of the Eldred World War II Museum about her experiences as a nurse in World War II. There is a three-ring binder in her name which is now a part of history and will remain in the museum.

KHS holds 3rd annual dodgeball tournament

The Kane Area High School held its Third Annual Dodgeball Tournament on Thursday. The afternoon finals pitted two-time runner-up Super Troopers against the Wolves of Ball Street in a best of three series. The Super Troopers won the title 2-1 to take the championship. Members of the Super Troopers were juniors Andy Bundy, Shane Rolick, Tyler Rolick, Chris Udovich, Jake Shrubb and Hunter Yasurek.
Event coordinator Todd Silfies said approximately $700 was raised at the event. Proceeds from the day will be donated to Kane Area Revitalization Enterprise’s Amphitheater project.

Col. Lisa Forsyth is Kane commencement speaker

U.S. Army Col. Lisa Forsyth, a native of Mt. Jewett, will be the speaker for the Kane High School commencement on Friday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at the school auditorium.
A 1983 graduate of Kane Area High School, Forsyth is the daughter of Ellen Forsyth of 19 Anderson St., Mt. Jewett, and the late Jerry Forsyth.
Her siblings include Julie Boyer of Kane, a first-grade teacher at the Kane Elementary School; Susan Todd of Florida; and the late John Forsyth.
Forsyth said "it's quite an honor" to be chosen as the commencement speaker for her high school alma mater.

Survey shows support for non-motorized trail

MT. JEWETT – Most respondents in a survey favor a non-motorized trail over the 3.4-mile rail corridor between Mt. Jewett and the Kinzua Bridge State Park.
Matt Benson of Hamlin Township gave a report on the survey Wednesday at a meeting of an informal group that has been promoting the proposed trail.

Route 6 hiker/author to speak Saturday library

Kane area residents with good memories may remember Joe Hurley, a retired newspaper reporter who hiked through the area back in 2004. Hurley trekked U.S. Route 6, the length of the United States, beginning at Cape Cod, Mass. and ending at Long Beach, Calif.
He stopped in Kane on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 and after spending the night at Almost Heaven Bed & Breakfast on Edgar James Street, said of the area, “Northern Pennsylvania is a wonderful place.”

Kane superintendent honored by his former school

Bob Gaetano, the superintendent of the Kane Area School District, made quite a favorable impression at his previous employer-- the Loyalsock Township Middle School.
The school near Williamsport has dedicated its 2014-15 yearbook as a tribute to Gaetano. He served as principal at the school for five years before becoming the Kane superintendent in February.

Kane High honors its student athletes at annual awards ceremony

The Kane All Sports Boosters Club held its annual awards ceremony Wednesday evening in the KHS auditorium. Longtime track and field and football coach Jim Sirianni was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame while James Lingenfelter and Taylor Morgan were named Kane High’s Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Taking home Scholar Athlete Awards were Emily Truden, Tyler Blankenship and Dillon Mattis.
