Geise publishes photography book featuring Pennsylvania elk

Pennsylvania's elk herd draws thousands of visitors to the area each year, many of whom come bearing their cameras in hopes of leaving with photographs of the creatures to document their time in Elk Country. Now those who may not have had much luck getting their own photos can instead take home a new book featuring a variety of photos of the animals.

I am writing this on a very cold, blustery day just before Thanksgiving. I was out early this very morning in a rather calm, partly sunny beginning of the day. By mid-afternoon the wind picked up and snow squalls had begun to increase across the area. What’s new about this, I calmly asked myself, as I fought the gusts of wind while filling my bird feeders. This is typical northwestern Pennsylvania weather in late November. One minute a snowstorm, the next, a sunny end to the day.

KCH’s new testing system can reduce recurrent heart attacks and strokes

On Oct. 23, Kane Community Hospital (KCH) began to offer new platelet aggregate testing through Accumetrics VerifyNow System. The VerifyNow System provides physicians with valuable information to more effectively determine medication options to prevent recurrent cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke. Platelet aggregate testing can reduce a patient’s risk for a recurrent life-altering event because certain medications have been found not to work for every patient.

Coaches vs. Cancer campaign set for Friday

The Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament will undergo a number of exciting changes this year as it becomes the EQT Energy Classic Elk County Holiday Tournament; however, one important element of the annual event will be continuing in a modified capacity.
The annual Coaches vs. Cancer campaign has been held during the tournament for a number of years, and has become a favorite of attendees as it has grown to include a competition to decide the favorite boys' and girls' coach each year and has also provided the opportunity for a lucky fan to leave with a basketball signed by all of the members of the girls' or boys' teams.

John J. "Jay" Carlson

John J. "Jay" Carlson, 79, formerly of 418 Park Ave, Kane, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at Transitions Healthcare Autumn Grove in Harrisville.
Born March 9, 1934, in Kane, he was a son of J. Walter and Natalie Kempf Carlson. On May 1, 1954, in Kane, he married Shirley A. Williams who preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 1999.

*Danielle May Cowan, 29, of 1003 Welsh St., Kane, is charged with creating a "hazardous physical offense" at Kane Community Hospital.

Martin appears at pre-trial hearing in death of girlfriend

JOHNSONBURG – On Friday morning accused murderer Nicholas Martin of Johnsonburg, charged in the killing of his 18-year-old girlfriend Alyssa Forsyth of Ridgway, appeared in front of Elk County President Judge Richard Masson as part of a pre-trial hearing.

JOHNSONBURG – Area firefighters responded to a fire shortly after 12:30 a.m. early Friday morning in the 200 block of Blaine Avenue in Johnsonburg.
The call came in at 12:33 a.m. to 204 Blaine Ave., a residence situated on a borough road running parallel to the state Route 219 bypass.

Wolves defeat Golden Tide in overtime

Kane High sports fans have been treated to some fantastic finishes this week by the Kane winter sports’ athletes.
The Wolves wrestling team clinched the showdown with Smethport on Tuesday in the final match of the night. The Kane girls’ basketball team defeated rival Johnsonburg on Wednesday night in overtime.

Firefighters respond to Johnsonburg blaze

JOHNSONBURG – Area firefighters responded to a fire shortly after 12:30 a.m. early Friday morning in the 200 block of Blaine Avenue in Johnsonburg.
The call came in at 12:33 a.m. to 204 Blaine Ave., a residence situated on a borough road running parallel to the state Route 219 bypass.
Elk Company 2 (Johnsonburg) and St. Marys Ambulance were called at 12:33 a.m.; Elk Company 1 (Crystal Fire Department out of St. Marys), Elk Company 4 (Ridgway), Elk Company 6 (Wilcox) were called out at 12:44 a.m., and Elk Company 5 (Jay Township) responded at 1 a.m.
