Cummings scores 4 in Wolves’ win over Hubbers

Wins have been hard to come by for the Kane boys’ soccer team the last couple seasons. The 2014 Wolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Tuesday afternoon before Mother Nature stepped in and made them wait another 24 hours to get back on the field and put the finishing touches on a 5-0 win over the Smethport Hubbers.

Ronald J. Smith, Jr., 54, of 6 Wetmore Trail near Kane, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, Sept. 2, 2014 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born June 18, 1960 in Brookville, he was the son of Ronald J. and Patricia R. Riggs Smith. On June 2, 1979 in Kane, he married Lisa A. Bauerle, who survives.

Clarence W. Eckert

Clarence W. "Duke" Eckert, 89, of 104 Forest Avenue, died Monday (Sept. 1, 2014) at Sena Kean Manor.
Born Oct. 16, 1924, in Elk County, he was a son of  the late Anthony and Julia Brendel Eckert. On May 26, 1950, in Kane, he married Rose Trumbull who survives.
"Duke" served with the U.S. Air Corps during World War II.
He was a Millwright and had worked at various times for HBSA Industries in Brooklyn, N.Y., the McKean County Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Affiliated Industries in Kane, J.R. Kilmer Wholesale Groceries and St. Marys Sewer Pipe Company in St. Marys.

Motorists are failing to stop at Mt. Jewett crosswalks

MT. JEWETT -- Under state law, motorists are required to stop for pedestrians who are waiting to cross the street at designated crosswalks.
Mt. Jewett has seven pedestrian crosswalks on Main Street (Route 6). But these crossings are most often are ignored by passing motorists, according to Mt. Jewett Borough Councilman John Keesee.
Speaking Tuesday at a meeting of the borough council, Keesee said he recently saw eight vehicles "pass by" a crosswalk while a person stood hopelessly waiting to cross the street.
According to Keesee, half of the motorists are local residents.

Mt. Jewett to upgrade computer for police department

MT. JEWETT – The Mt. Jewett Borough Council voted 4-0 Tuesday to spend about $4,400 to upgrade the computer system for the police department.
Council President Chuck Paar agreed with the expenditure along with Councilmen Wil Antrim, John Keesee and Don Martyna. 
Councilwoman Linda Berry and Councilmen Brett Morgan and Rod Danielson did not attend the meeting.

2 of 3 charges are dismissed against Kane woman

SMETHPORT – The two most serious charges have been dismissed in a court case involving a Kane woman whose vehicle struck and heavily damaged a street lighting-control device at Fraley and Field streets in uptown Kane.
Brenda Bobich, 46, of 7 Laurel Ave., Kane, accepted the plea agreement last month in McKean County Court, records show.
Kane Borough Police Officer Bill Nichols charged Bobich with careless driving, failure to report a traffic accident to police and failure to obey a traffic control device. The alleged incident took place Nov. 30.

Eric B. Horn

Eric B. Horn, 51, of Highland died Sunday morning at UPMC Hamot.  He was born on Feb. 24, 1963 in Smethport, PA, the son of Keith and Phyllis (Siegel) Horn.

Mr. Horn was an avid football player and fan.  He succeeded in making Big 30 both his junior and senior year playing for Kane High School.  Later, he became a loyal Green Bay Packers fan.
 

Wilda Genevieve Dixon

Wilda Genevieve Dixon, 93, of Kane, formerly of Smethport, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday (Sept. 1, 2014). She was a resident of The Lutheran Home at Kane.
She was born March 12, 1921 in Owls Nest, a daughter of Walter M. and Elma Rea Ishman.  Wilda married Donald Leroy Dixon, who survives, in Kane on Aug. 23, 1947. They moved to Smethport in 1947 and began their ministry at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. 

Flag gift is tribute for Veterans Day program in Kane

For several years, Coleen Lundeen of Wetmore Township has organized a special Veterans Day program at the First United Methodist Church in Kane.
As the director of the Children’s Choir at the church, Lundeen started the program to give the children an opportunity to sing patriotic songs.
The program has grown to become one of the area’s most popular Veterans Day events. More than 400 attend the annual event—always on the second Sunday of November, which is on or near Veterans Day.
