44th Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival opens Friday

MT. JEWETT – The 44th Swedish Festival opens Friday in Mt. Jewett.
The three-day festival, which is one of the longest running summer events in the region, attracts thousands to the close-knit Mt. Jewett community for food, entertainment and special activities.
Where else can you enjoy a Swedish smorgasbord, a Swedish Meatball Contest and watch Viking Ship races?
"We're all excited about our community-oriented festival," Beth Carpenter said. "It brings us all together. We look forward to seeing the Mt. Jewett natives who come home for the festival."

Wetmore Twp. supervisors review drainage project

Plans are being finalized for a drainage project on Dwight's Road in Wetmore Township.
Supervisors Bill Ryding, Elaine Bodistow and Steve Dyne met Tuesday with Roy Pedersen of E&M Engineers of Bradford to scrutinize the plans.
The McKean County Conservation District-- through its Dirt and Gravel Roads program-- is providing a grant of $5,625 for the project.

Red Cross Blood Drive in Kane exceeds goal

Kane area residents showed great support Monday at the American Red Cross Blood Drive at the First United Methodist Church.
Reports show that 45 units of blood were collected during the six-hour Blood Drive. This total more than exceeded the goal of 36 units.

DA holds conference on recent drug arrests

District Attorney Shawn T. McMahon spoke at a press conference Tuesday afternoon concerning recent drug busts and how citizens can be aware of suspicious activity involving the synthetic drug "bath salts."

Kane is expected to receive aid for fire hall doors

SMETHPORT – The borough of Kane is expected to receive $14,520 in federal aid to replace the doors on six garage bays at the fire hall on Poplar Street.
The borough is seeking the aid from the county's "pot" of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.
The borough also is seeking $14,190 in CDBG funds for a new energy-efficient gas-fired boiler at the fire hall.

Mt. Jewett council rejects bids for paving work

MT. JEWETT – The paving of Poplar Street in Mt. Jewett apparently won't take place this year.
Acting Monday, the Mt. Jewett Borough Council voted 6-0 to reject paving bids, which came in at more than twice the estimate provided by the state.
Shawn Agosti, who handles estimates for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), pegged the Poplar Street paving job at $32,058.
The low bid from Glenn Hawbaker of State College was $71,875. IA Construction of Franklin submitted a bid of $93,343.

Kane School Board OKs hire of 2 full-time positions

The Kane Area School Board of Directors met in the school’s middle school auditorium on Monday evening for a special meeting. On the agenda were discussions regarding the hiring of a board secretary, school psychologist, technology support position and the district’s next superintendent.

Wolves play well, but Pa. loses in Big 30 game

BRADFORD – The Pennsylvania All-Stars dug themselves a big hole on Saturday night when they allowed the New York All-Stars to jump out to an early 16-0 lead in the Don Raabe Big 30 Classic at Bradford’s Parkway Field.
The game was postponed with less than five minutes to play in the first quarter when game officials spotted lightning. After waiting for nearly two hours in the hopes of continuing play, the Big 30 Committee decided to resume the game Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Pa. squad came back and made a game of it, but still ended up on the short end of the score, 37-24.
