Wolves’ season comes to end with loss to Gremlins

CLARION – The 2013-2014 Kane boys’ basketball team left everything they had on the court in Thursday night’s District 9 AA playoff game with Karns City. The Wolves and Gremlins battled it out for four quarters but it came down to the final seconds as a Kane basket was ruled after the buzzer to give Karns City a 44-43 win.

Chamber honors citizens, firemen at banquet

The Kane Chamber Commerce honored citizens and firefighters Thursday at its annual banquet at the Kane Fire Hall on Poplar Street.
John "Orson" Carlson, who has directed Saturday morning youth bowling at the Kane Elks Lodge for over 30 years, is the 2014 "Citizen-of-the-Year."

Cleland to address UPB graduates at commencement

BRADFORD – Senior Judge John M. Cleland, who has earned a reputation in the region and throughout Pennsylvania for his unwavering fairness and strong commitment to juvenile justice during his 30 years on bench, will address the graduating class at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford in April.
Cleland, who is also a member and past chairman of the university’s Advisory Board and a Kane native, will deliver the keynote address during commencement exercises Sunday, April 27, in the KOA Arena in the Richard E. and Ruth McDowell Sport and Fitness Center.

A Kane woman was found guilty Wednesday on charges linked with a Nov. 30 accident at Fraley and Field streets in the borough.

KAMS wrestlers conclude season; Hulings district champ

The Kane Area Middle School wrestlers traveled to Brockway on Saturday to take part in the District 9 Junior High Tournament. Nine Wolves wrestlers competed in the district tournament, with one Kane wrestler, Aiden Hulings, coming away with a championship.

Donald Morris Smith

Donald Morris Smith, 77, Brockway, Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at Punxsutawney Area Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 14, 1937 in Leeper, son of the late Floyd and Ruth Elizabeth Penfield Smith. He married Donna Fox Smith, she preceded him in death in 2003.
He was a graduate of North Clarion High School, was in the U.S. Army, and was a manager for Bentz Furniture store in St. Marys for many years. He was a member of VFW in Kane and Crenshaw. He lived in Leeper than Kane before moving to Brockway seven years ago.

Controversy still lingers over an extended day that went into effect with the current school year in Kane.
Speaking at a school board Curriculum Committee meeting Tuesday at the middle school auditorium, several administrators cited advantages of having more time to instruct students.

After-school bus survey has mixed results in Kane

There are mixed results in an after-school bus survey taken by the Kane School District for students in grades six through 12.
Jay Israel, co-principal at the elementary school and principal in charge of athletics, released survey information Tuesday at a meeting of the school board's Curriculum Meeting.
