PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, in conjunction with Jefferson County District Attorney Jeff Burkett, announced Wednesday at a press conference the issuance of 18 drug-related arrest warrants for offenders from Jefferson County and the surrounding area.
Gerald W. Nelson (Gerry), 86, died Saturday, April 26, 2014 at his home in Durham, N.C.
The son of Elna and Axel Nelson, Gerry was born March 8, 1928. One of 13 children, he spent his early years in Kane. He married Nancy Johnson, his wife for 53 years, in September 1948. The couple lived and worked in several cities in western New York and Pennsylvania before settling in Pittsburgh, where they made home for their three children. Gerry worked for several companies but always described himself as a salesman, sharing many stories of his days on the road.
A gas line on Oak Street was punctured Thursday in a reported automobile accident, according to multiple sources. Parts of Kane were reportedly evacuated as part of precautionary measures.

Betty Mae Johnson, 91, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Lutheran Home at Kane after a short illness.
Born Sept. 12, 1922 in Kane, she was a daughter of the late Charles Monroe and Mabel Elizabeth Peterson Eliason. On Dec. 20, 1940, she married Daniel Lehman who died Feb. 5, 1942. She was widowed at 19 with a one-week old infant daughter. On April 6, 1945, she married Gunnar Arne Johnson who preceded her in death on May 4, 1987.
Richard A. "Dick" Cherry, 83, died Monday, April 28, 2014 at the Kane Community Hospital, with his loving daughter Karen by his side.Â
Dick was born May 2, 1930, in Johnsonburg, the son of the late Patsy and Theresa (Steinbach) Cherry.
Dick married the love of his life, Pearl Bean, on Sept. 27, 1951. She survives.

Kane High School Physical Education teacher Adam Smelko finished fifth overall in Sundayâ€™s Pro Football Hall of Fame Marathon in Canton, Ohio. Smelko crossed the finish line in 2:48.46 which is more than 10 minutes better than his previous best for a marathon.
