October 20th
Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys has been found guilty of second degree murder in the April 5-6, 1999 homicide of Irene Challingsworth, a 56-year-old St. Marys beautician.
A 12-member Butler County jury concluded their deliberations Thursday morning at approximately 10:20 a.m. when Elk County Court of Common Pleas President Judge Richard Masson announced the a verdict had been reached inside the Elk County Courthouse.
October 19th
The King David Post 1132 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Kane is seeking volunteer drivers for its transport van.
The VFW uses a seven-passenger Ford van to provide free transportation for Kane area military veterans to Veterans Administration (VA) hospitals and clinics.
The volunteer drivers do not need to be veterans themselves. However, the drivers are required to undergo training and medical tests. They also need to have annual flu shots.
October 18th
University of Pittsburgh at Bradford students and their professor came to Kane Tuesday to gather input from Kane and Mt. Jewett residents on the role of trails in boosting the local economy.
Dr. William "Billy" Schumann, assistant professor of anthropology at the college, spoke at the 100-minute forum at the Kane Area Community Center along with three students in his Applied Anthropology class. The students included Jenna Oyler, a senior from Kane, and senior Ryan Crowley and junior Mara Kloss of Bradford.
October 17th
HAZEL HURST – The Hamlin Township Board of Supervisors is considering the addition of a tax on persons who work at jobs in the township.
The Local Services Tax (LST)—formerly known as the Emergency Municipal Services (EMS) tax—is allowed under state law and is assessed by several area municipalities.
The maximum tax permitted by law is $52 a year-- $1 per week.
Those earning $12,000 or less a year can apply for a full tax refund.
The proposed tax would not affect retired persons living in the township.
October 16th
AmeriCorps—called “a domestic Peace Corps”—has assigned three local women to tutor and mentor students in the Kane Area School District.
The three include:
*Kathleen Prosperi of Kane, who is based at the high school.
*Ashley Mix of Mt. Jewett, who is assigned to the elementary school.
*Kathy Long of Kane, who works with students at the middle school and elementary schools.
“All three are full-time AmeriCorps volunteers,” Dr. Maryann Anderson, Kane school superintendent, said. “It’s a wonderful program.”
October 13th
The Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union has completed its move to its new office at 211 S. Fraley St. at West Hemlock Avenue in Kane.
The new site formerly housed Kane Monuments, which closed its local operations in 2008.
The Credit Union has operated in Kane since 2005 in space it rented at 22 Greeves St. near Summit Drive.
Patty Shaffer, the manager of the Kane office of the Mountain Laurel Credit Union, said earlier this year that the local office needed more space.
October 12th
Santilli Field in Kane soon will resemble a Major League Baseball park.
The Kane Borough Council agreed Monday to allow the school’s All-Sports Booster Club to sell advertising banners for display on the outfield fence at Santilli Field on Hacker Street.
Larry Smith of Kane, the vice president of the Booster Club, and Steve Peterson of Mt. Jewett, a board member, told council the advertising banners would raise money for improvements at the baseball field.
“This will really help a lot,” Peterson said in his presentation to council.
HAZEL HURST – The Hamlin Township Board of Supervisors has again tabled a request for a waiver in its stormwater management ordinance for a Marcellus Shale gas well project.
Penn Environmental and Remediation (Penn E&R) of Pittsburgh is seeking the waiver for a project linked with a Shell well site off Detrick Road in Wetmore Township.
According to Penn E&R, the project calls for the construction of a 100x100-foot pad for a “metering station” and a four-inch pipeline.
