Street paving project winds down in Kane

The annual street paving project in Kane is nearly complete.
Workers from IA Construction of Franklin hoped to finish the project Friday. Crews worked Friday on Poplar Street and Wetmore Avenue near the intersection with Fraley Street.

Candidate is on ballot for vacant seat in Highland

JAMES CITY – A lone candidate will appear on the ballot Nov. 5 to fill the remaining two years in the term of former Highland Township Supervisor Charlie Vaughn.
According to Kim Frey, director of the Elk County Board of Elections, Glen Hulings of James City will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot as a Democratic candidate for a two-year term. A Republican candidate will not be listed on the ballot for a two-year term, Frey said.

County grants tax-relief status to Kane Magnetics site

SMETHPORT – If the state gives its blessing, a new owner of the 17.5-acre Kane Magnetics complex at 700 Elk Ave. in Kane won't be paying property taxes until 2023.
The McKean County Board of Commissioners agreed Tuesday to place the defunct plant in a tax-relief program known as the Keystone Opportunity Zone (KOZ).

Kane fails again in bid for share of federal money

SMETHPORT – The borough of Kane has not fared well in competing the past two years for a share of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money allocated to McKean County.
The borough struck out again Tuesday as the McKean County Board of Commissioners approved the "best use" for $225,825 in CDBG funds awarded to the county.

Classes in Kane School District resume Tuesday

“We’re ready to go.”
That’s how Kane School District Superintendent Dr. Maryann Anderson signaled the start of classes Tuesday for more than 1,200 Kane students.
Beginning Tuesday, the school day for students in kindergarten through 12th grade will run from 8:05 a.m. to 3:05 a.m.

St. Marys to get Civil Air Patrol squadron

Attendees at the American Spirit Aviation Festival at the St. Marys Municipal Airport on Saturday likely saw Civil Air Patrol members from both the Clarion and Warren squadrons assisting with the operation of the event and also manning an information booth to spread the word about the organization as St. Marys will soon be getting its own Civil Air Patrol squadron.

Teacher Jeff Gibbs faces 10-day suspension

Kane School District Superintendent Dr. Maryann Anderson has suspended high school teacher Jeff Gibbs for alleged violations of school policy.
According to sources, Gibbs reportedly has been suspended for 10 days and won’t be teaching Tuesday when classes resume.

Ribbon-cutting for Integrity Martial Arts Academy

Nathan and Regina Sherman are surrounded by students, instructors and their children as the ribbon is cut for one of Kane's new businesses, Integrity Martial Arts Academy. Sensei Sherman began offering classes in Kane last fall at the Kane Community Center.
