Sunny weather prevails at 44th Swedish Festival

MT. JEWETT – Sunny weather and warm temperatures prevailed over the weekend for the 44th Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival.
The festival opened Friday and ended with the closing ceremony Sunday at the Center Street stage.
Beth Carpenter served as chairman of a volunteer committee that will begin meetings next month for the 45th festival in 2015.
A highlight of the closing day of the festival was the crowning of Kalyn Kost of Lantz Corners as the Teen Queen. She is the daughter of Kevin and Stephanie Kost. She will be a freshman at Smethport High School.

Ground to be broken for Kinzua Visitors Center

MT. JEWETT – A ground-breaking ceremony for the Visitors Center at the Kinzua Bridge State Park near Mt. Jewett is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 21.
The time has yet to be set by the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).
"I invite everyone to attend the ground-breaking ceremony," Linda Devlin told the Kane Republican. "DCNR has not yet announced the time, but we think it will be late morning or early afternoon. This is an important next step in the region’s tourism development."

Kane native is among drivers in epic car tour

Kane native Alan Miller returned to his hometown Thursday for the first time in a decade.
It was a short visit.
Miller is driving his new red Mini Cooper sports car in a coast-to-coast journey that just happened to pass through Kane.
About 300 Mini Coopers-- spaced out over several miles-- came through Kane over a two-hour period Thursday afternoon. The day's trek began in Pittsburgh and ended Thursday night in Buffalo.

Swedish Festival features Car and Motorcycle Show

MT. JEWETT – The 44th Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival kicks off tonight with the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. at St. Matthews Lutheran Church on East Main Street.
The three-day festival, which attracts thousands, ends Sunday with the closing ceremony at 6 p.m. at the Center Street stage.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Car and Motorcycle Show to be held Saturday at the community park at the end of Gallup Avenue. Registration begins at 10 a.m. The show runs from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

More frequent shutoffs coming for unpaid sewer bills

Water shutoffs for unpaid Kane sewer bills soon will be ordered four times a year instead of twice.
This is the message from Richard Lear, president of the Pennsylvania Municipal Service Co. (PAMS). The company, based in Oakmont near Pittsburgh, handles sewer bills for Kane and a portion of Wetmore Township.
Lear was a prime speaker Wednesday at a joint meeting of the Kane Borough Sewer Authority and the Kane Borough Council. The meeting was held to discuss problems in collecting delinquent sewer bills.

Computer for cruiser is priority for Kane police

Police Chief Heath Boyer is hoping to bring the Kane Police Department into the "technology age."
Speaking Wednesday at a special Kane Borough Council meeting on "information technology (IT)," Boyer said obtaining a laptop computer for use in the police cruiser is his "top priority."

44th Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival opens Friday

MT. JEWETT – The 44th Swedish Festival opens Friday in Mt. Jewett.
The three-day festival, which is one of the longest running summer events in the region, attracts thousands to the close-knit Mt. Jewett community for food, entertainment and special activities.
Where else can you enjoy a Swedish smorgasbord, a Swedish Meatball Contest and watch Viking Ship races?
"We're all excited about our community-oriented festival," Beth Carpenter said. "It brings us all together. We look forward to seeing the Mt. Jewett natives who come home for the festival."

Wetmore Twp. supervisors review drainage project

Plans are being finalized for a drainage project on Dwight's Road in Wetmore Township.
Supervisors Bill Ryding, Elaine Bodistow and Steve Dyne met Tuesday with Roy Pedersen of E&M Engineers of Bradford to scrutinize the plans.
The McKean County Conservation District-- through its Dirt and Gravel Roads program-- is providing a grant of $5,625 for the project.

Red Cross Blood Drive in Kane exceeds goal

Kane area residents showed great support Monday at the American Red Cross Blood Drive at the First United Methodist Church.
Reports show that 45 units of blood were collected during the six-hour Blood Drive. This total more than exceeded the goal of 36 units.
