One dead in Mersen explosion

ST. MARYS – Officials on Thursday confirmed the death of a St. Marys Mersen USA employee after an industrial explosion in the morning.
Noah Nichelson, St. Marys Mersen USA general manager, said in a statement to WJAC that one employee was killed and two were injured following “an equipment related accident” at the plant.

Kane Chamber seeks nominees for 'Citizen-of-Year'

The deadline is nearing to submit nominations for the annual Kane area "Citizen-of-the-Year" award.
The Kane Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations at its office at 54 Fraley St. in Uptown Kane.

Emergency dispatchers confirmed a call went out shortly after 9 a.m. to Mersen USA in St. Marys, located at 1032 Trout Run Rd.

Federal agency OKs 'injection well' near James City

JAMES CITY – The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved a permit for a controversial underground "injection well" near James City.
The permit has been issued to Seneca Resources-- the exploration and production wing of National Fuel Gas of Williamsville near Buffalo.

Scarnati hoping for stability in Pa.

According to State Senator Joe Scarnati (R-Brockway), the Commonwealth has come a long way in the past few years but significant additional progress must still be made.
As the governor's budget will be released in early February, Scarnati said legislators have created "a tough budget cycle" as they've been "advocating for more funding for our public schools."
Because of this, and other factors, finding the dollars to completely fund the spending plan has been a tall task.

Despite frigid temperatures, many Kane area residents turned out Tuesday to donate blood in a "Heart To Heart" blood drive in memory of Chris Riley.

Kane, Mt. Jewett officials join planning board

SMETHPORT – Representatives from Kane and Mt. Jewett have been added to the McKean County Planning Commission.
The new commission members include Erin Vassallo, executive director of the Kane Area Development Center, and Don Martyna, a member of the Mt. Jewett Borough Council.

The Kane area is bracing for another blast of bitter cold arctic air with "wind-chill" temperatures of 30 below zero.
The frigid temperatures will be comparable to those of Jan. 7 in the Kane area.
But there is a big difference.

Man jailed for missing Megan's Law deadline

A Tier 3 sexual offender on the state Megan's Law registry has been jailed for failure to meet registration deadlines.
Kevin Yancy Fuller, 55, of 32 Wilson Ave., Port Allegany, was placed in the McKean County Jail on Monday in lieu of $25,000 cash bail set by Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman.
