What has become Kaneâs biggest attraction of the year is slated next weekend at Evergreen Park.
The 8th annual Art in the Wilds will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29, with artwork on display from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, rain or shine.
There is no admission charge. Parking also is free.
More than 5,200 are expected to attend Art in the Wilds, which always coincides with Kane High Alumni Weekend in June.
Robert "Bucky" Thompson started working evenings and weekends at Thompsonâs Floor Coverings while he was still in high school. Buck graduated with Kane Highâs Class of 1969 and took a job at Keystone Carbon, where he stayed for a short time before coming back to help his brother, William âWillieâ Thompson in the family business. Forty-plus years later, he is ready to call it a career.
Willieâs son, Bill, now runs the business and had plenty to say about his uncle Buck.
MT. JEWETT â Ground will be broken this summer for an elaborate Visitor Center at the Kinzua Bridge State Park near Mt. Jewett.
Linda Devlin, executive director of the Bradford-based Allegheny National Forest (ANF) Visitors Bureau, can't wait.
"I'm really excited this project is moving forward," Devlin said Wednesday. "It's the next step for development at the park."
JAMES CITY â Residents and organizations opposed to a proposed âinjectionâ well in Highland Township plan to gather Saturday for a forum at the township fire hall in James City.
The event will feature a picnic, workshops and remarks by representatives of the Community Environmental Defense Fund (CELDF) and other organizations.
The forum is open to the public.
SMETHPORT â McKean County is waiting for its first same-sex applicants for a marriage license.
Same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania became legal about a month ago.
Same-sex applicants have yet to apply for a marriage license in McKean County.
âIf they come in, weâll accommodate them,â Harrijane Hannon Moore said in reference to same-sex applicants for marriage licenses. She is the elected county register of wills and clerk of the orphanâs court. Her office in the county courthouse in Smethport issues marriage licenses.
LUDLOW â If the regional head of the U.S. Forest Service wasn't aware of management concerns for the Allegheny National Forest (ANF), she certainly knows about them now.
Each year, more than 12,000 apply for admission to the United States Military Academy-- commonly called West Point.
Most applicants are high school seniors who are hoping to be among the 1,200 selected to enter the prestigious institution on the banks of the Hudson River, 50 miles north of New York City.
Thirteen talented dancers from the area will be making the trip to Disney World Resorts in Orlando, Fla. later this week to perform at the famed entertainment complex.
The dancers, 12 girls and one boy, all take classes at Studio K Dance Studio in Kane. Studio owner and instructor Kate Undercoffer and her group have been practicing for this opportunity since October 2013 and are ready to âwowâ the Magic Kingdom.
Kane Borough Councilman Dennis Drost still is confident that repairs can be made this summer at the tennis courts and basketball court at Evergreen Park.
"We can get it done," Drost said Friday.
