Plans under way for auction at former school

Plans are being made to auction off surplus school equipment and other items now housed at the vacant Chestnut Street Elementary School in Kane.
The auction is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3. Public inspection of the auction items is expected to start about 9 a.m.
Corey Brown is the auctioneer hired by the Kane Area School District to conduct the sale. He is associated with Green Gable Village located on Route 219 in Great Valley, N.Y. just north of Salamanca. Green Gable Village is known as a multi-dealer shop for antiques.

Kane is 'honored' by nomination to national panel

Ken Kane said Thursday that he is "extremely honored" to be nominated for a seat on a newly-formed advisory committee on land management in U.S. national forests.
"I'm honored they would considered me qualified to serve on the committee," Kane said.
A 1977 graduate of Kane Area High School and a Kane borough resident, Kane has served as vice president of Keith Horn, Inc. consulting foresters since 1994.
He has worked for the Kane-based company since 1983,  a year after he graduated from Penn State University with a degree in forestry.

Criminal cases filed in Kane District Court

Several criminal cases have been filed in Kane District Court.
Information on the following cases is from court documents:
*Jarod T. Poulin, 21, of Cuba, N.Y. is charged with the possession of .95 of a gram of “Kryp2nite Original”—which “has been labeled as synthetic marijuana.”
The defendant also is charged with careless driving, following too closely, operating an unregistered vehicle and other violations.
Mt. Jewett Borough Police Officer Steve Hale placed the charges after stopping a silver 2002 Chevrolet Camaro driven east on Main Street (Route 6) in Mt. Jewett.

Several criminal cases filed in Kane court

Several criminal cases have been filed in the office of Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman.
Information on the following cases is from court documents:
*Travis C. Davidson, 29, of 2 Curtis Road Ext., Ludlow, is charged with driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol.
Kane Police Officer Bill Nichols filed the charges after stopping a 2004 black Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by the defendant on Welsh Street in Kane.
A test at Kane Community Hospital determined that Davidson’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was .229 percent, more than double the legal limit.

Makayla Anderson is chosen as Miss Kane High

Makayla Anderson is the new Miss Kane High.
The Junior Class at Kane Area High School selected Anderson during an assembly Wednesday at the school auditorium.
Christina "Tina" Moore is the first runner-up in the annual pageant.
As Miss Kane High, Anderson will represent the community in the Miss McKean County queen competition held at the county fair. The county queen takes part in state competition.
Anderson also will participate in many summer festivals and events along with girls from Bradford, Smethport, Port Allegany and Otto-Eldred schools.

Deadline near for filing form for school tax relief

For the past four years, hundreds of property owners in the Kane Area School District have received a discount on their annual school tax bill.
The tax relief is made possible, in part, through the allocation of state gaming revenue from casinos under state "Act 1" of a special state legislative session in 2006.
To qualify for a discount, property owners are required to file a one-time application for a Homestead or Farmstead exclusion.

Kane native opens new laundry in his hometown

Kane native Mike Myers no longer lives here, but he is connected to his hometown vicariously through customers at his new local laundromat.
Myers sells commercial laundry equipment in western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio.
Seeing Kane go a year without a laundromat of its own, Myers stepped forward to open the Fresh-N-Go Express Laundry at 397 N. Fraley St. adjacent to the Dollar General store. A former laundromat at the same site has been closed for about a year, Myers said.

Driver hurt as log truck hits, destroys house

Like a 40-ton missile, a fully-loaded log truck careened out-of-control Saturday morning and sliced into a wood-frame house on Route 66 in the Ten Commandments area just south of Kane.
Miraculously, the truck driver and four people inside the house were not seriously injured.
The truck driver—Thomas L. Jashurek, 39, of Kane—was taken from the scene by Emergycare ambulance and immediately placed on a medical helicopter at the landing pad at Kane Community Hospital.

'It's bigger than a miracle,' crash survivor says

Bruce Peterson no longer has a house.
It was suddenly taken away Saturday when it was struck and destroyed by an out-of-control fully-loaded log truck.
Despite losing his home of 25 years, Peterson is grateful.
The impact miraculously spared his life and the lives of three other family members who were inside the house at the time of the spectacular crash on Route 66 in the Ten Commandments area of Wetmore Township just south of Kane.
"It's bigger than a miracle," Peterson said Sunday with tears in his eyes. "Somehow, we all made it out alive. God was with us."

Kane Screens unveils plans for space in former school

February 18, 2012

Kane Manufacturing—also known as Kane Screens—plans to convert space in the former Chestnut Street Elementary School into a “command center” for its engineering and office staff.
Under a tentative timetable, the company could be occupying office space in the building by July 1.
Kane Manufacturing, which has operated a production facility in the borough since 1890, last week submitted a high bid of $100,002 for the purchase of the vacant school.
The Kane School Board sought bids to sell the school, which closed following the 2009-10 school year.
