Marilyn Blackmore is named as Citizen-of-the-Year

Marilyn Blackmore is a founder and chairman of Kane's largest annual attraction-- the Art in the Wilds held in June each year at Evergreen Park.
The Kane Chamber of Commerce has recognized her tireless volunteer efforts for the event by naming her as its Citizen-of-the-Year.
She will be honored at the Chamber banquet to be held Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Kane Fire Hall.
The Chamber has selected Dyne Excavating as its Business-of-the-Year. Steve Dyne and his wife, Kerri also will be honored at the banquet.

Wetmore supervisors set policy for cellphones

The Wetmore Township Board of Supervisors met Tuesday to discuss a variety of topics such as road materials, road projects and road salt.
But the longest discussion at the 55-minute meeting covered the use of three cellphones assigned to the road crew.
The township spends $112 per month for three cellphones for use by full- and part-time workers in the road department.

Two plead guilty in bath salts ring

RIDGWAY – Two of the four co-defendants charged in August 2014 in a criminal conspiracy for the sale and distribution of alpha-PVP, the drug commonly known as bath salts, pleaded guilty Monday to charges at Elk County Court.

New Kane school superintendent has ‘fabulous welcome’

Bob Gaetano began work Monday as the new superintendent for the Kane Area School District.
Escorted by School Board President Claire Ann Buckley, Gaetano visited virtually every classroom in the elementary school, the middle school and the high school.
“I am receiving a fabulous welcome,” Gaetano said as he toured the high school. He said the warm greetings from students, faculty and administrators are “beyond words.”
“It’s more than I expected,” he said in commenting on the reception he received Monday.

No cuts in Mt. Jewett water bills due to 'boil' notice

MT. JEWETT – The 450 water customers in Mt. Jewett currently should boil their water used for drinking and cooking.
But, despite this temporary inconvenience, the customers won't be receiving a break on their water bills.
The bills still will be based on usage.
According to Borough Council President Chuck Paar, some customers believe they should receive a cut in their water bills because of a "boil water" advisory.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club said that Punxsutawney Phil, the world's only true weather-forecasting groundhog, isn't afraid to take on the Super Bowl again this year.
Bill Deeley, Groundhog Club president, said all they can do is do their thing.
"Luckily, we don't have a Pennsylvania team in it, so we won't have to compete with them, although I wish that we did," Deeley said, adding that the banquet was on Saturday night, mainly because they can't use the school on Sunday.

Fox Twp. youngster thrives despite being born with rare birth defect

DAGUS MINES – Although she is five-years-old Fiona Jane O'Dell is still referred to as an 'O' baby, having been born with a rare birth defect known as a giant omphalocele which only occurs in one in every 10,000 pregnancies.
An omphalocele is a birth defect in which an infant's intestine or other abdominal organs are outside of the body due to a hole in their belly button area. The organs are covered only by a thin layer of tissue and can easily be seen.
