SMETHPORT â McKean County will save over $205,000 by refinancing loans from 2007.
Acting at a special meeting Thursday, County Commissioners Joe DeMott, Al Pingie and Cliff Lane approved a âdebt ordinanceâ that calls for the issuance of $3,590,000 in new bonds to be repaid over an 11-year period.
The new loan pays off three bonds issued in 2007 for such projects as the courthouse renovation and the replacement of the Galico Bridge in Keating Township.
Falling interest rates prompted the commissioners to consider refinancing the 2007 bonds to save interest payments.
An âArtist in Residenceâ is helping 10 Kane Middle School students lay the groundwork for a video linked with the Kane Sesquicentennial in 2014.

âStudents will be working on targeted areas with the summer school staff,â she said. âPre and post-assessments will track student progress and growth as a result of the summer school program.â

The program is designed to encourage property owners to retain their agricultural or forest land rather than sell it for development.
Acting at a meeting Tuesday at the county courthouse in Smethport, County Commissioners Joe DeMott, Al Pingie and Cliff Lane endorsed a resolution that sets forth criteria for the 2013 tax year.

While local officials are trying not to cause a panic with Ridgway residents, the fact remains the same: with two unexplained fires less than three weeks apart being deemed arson cases, the unease has set in.
"The two that we've had in three weeks, we have an issue," said Ridgway fire chief John Wygant. "I don't want to elaborate on it because I don't want to create a problem in the community, and I don't want to cause a panic or have people running, buying guns and shooting people. We can't have that.

Students taught by Debbie Lenaway may see their teacher more often outside the classroom than in school.
Lenaway spends much of her spare time watching her students perform in concerts or in sporting events such as Little League baseball or youth soccer.
âI sit with the parents in the bleachers,â Lenaway said. âOf course, I have to cheer for players on both teams on the field.â
