Highland Twp. ‘injection’ well foes plan forum

JAMES CITY – Residents and organizations opposed to a proposed “injection” well in Highland Township plan to gather Saturday for a forum at the township fire hall in James City.
The event will feature a picnic, workshops and remarks by representatives of the Community Environmental Defense Fund (CELDF) and other organizations.
The forum is open to the public.

McKean County awaits first same-sex marriage applicants

SMETHPORT – McKean County is waiting for its first same-sex applicants for a marriage license.
Same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania became legal about a month ago.
Same-sex applicants have yet to apply for a marriage license in McKean County.
“If they come in, we’ll accommodate them,” Harrijane Hannon Moore said in reference to same-sex applicants for marriage licenses. She is the elected county register of wills and clerk of the orphan’s court. Her office in the county courthouse in Smethport issues marriage licenses.

Studio K dancers set to perform at Disney World this week

Thirteen talented dancers from the area will be making the trip to Disney World Resorts in Orlando, Fla. later this week to perform at the famed entertainment complex.
The dancers, 12 girls and one boy, all take classes at Studio K Dance Studio in Kane. Studio owner and instructor Kate Undercoffer and her group have been practicing for this opportunity since October 2013 and are ready to “wow” the Magic Kingdom.

2 jailed after suspected 'bath salts' found in car

Kane Police found a cache of suspected "bath salts" in a vehicle searched late Sunday afternoon in the borough.
Two arrests have been made in connection with the discovery.
The defendants are Scott Alan Yanak, 34, of Moon Township near Pittsburgh and Lori Lee Grotzinger, 30, of 318 Ash St., St. Marys.

Couple in child-starving case cancel restitution challenge

SMETHPORT – A Mt. Jewett couple jailed on child-starving charges have withdrawn their post-sentencing motions that seek a reduction in the restitution they owe.
Mark and Susan Hooper of 21 Anderson St., Mt. Jewett, were sentenced to county jail April 8 after pleading “no contest” to charges filed last year by State Police Trooper Mary Gausman.

Kane school superintendent to retire in January

Dr. Maryann Anderson plans to retire Jan. 6 as the superintendent of the Kane Area School District.
The surprise public announcement came Thursday at a meeting of the school board in the middle school auditorium.

Final Kane school budget shows tax increase

The Kane School Board voted 5-2 Thursday to approve a final 2014-15 budget that calls for a property tax increase, but no teacher furloughs.
According to School District Business Manager Steve Perry, the "average" residential property owner will see a net tax increase of $8. Tax bills are payable in August.
