DA holds conference on recent drug arrests

District Attorney Shawn T. McMahon spoke at a press conference Tuesday afternoon concerning recent drug busts and how citizens can be aware of suspicious activity involving the synthetic drug "bath salts."
As a result of an ongoing investigation the following suspects have been charged in possession and distributing bath salts:

Kane is expected to receive aid for fire hall doors

SMETHPORT – The borough of Kane is expected to receive $14,520 in federal aid to replace the doors on six garage bays at the fire hall on Poplar Street.
The borough is seeking the aid from the county's "pot" of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.
The borough also is seeking $14,190 in CDBG funds for a new energy-efficient gas-fired boiler at the fire hall.

Mt. Jewett council rejects bids for paving work

MT. JEWETT – The paving of Poplar Street in Mt. Jewett apparently won't take place this year.
Acting Monday, the Mt. Jewett Borough Council voted 6-0 to reject paving bids, which came in at more than twice the estimate provided by the state.
Shawn Agosti, who handles estimates for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), pegged the Poplar Street paving job at $32,058.
The low bid from Glenn Hawbaker of State College was $71,875. IA Construction of Franklin submitted a bid of $93,343.

Kane School Board OKs hire of 2 full-time positions

The Kane Area School Board of Directors met in the school’s middle school auditorium on Monday evening for a special meeting. On the agenda were discussions regarding the hiring of a board secretary, school psychologist, technology support position and the district’s next superintendent.

'Time Capsule' vault dedicated at closing ceremony

The closing ceremony Sunday for the Kane Sesquicentennial celebration featured the dedication of a vault for the Time Capsule at the Kane Depot.
Scott Morgan, the chairman of the Time Capsule project, said families and organizations have until December to take part in the project or add to their existing envelopes.
The 8x12-inch envelopes-- each up to one inch thick with pieces of memorabilia-- will be sealed inside a concrete vault added along the courtyard at the Depot.

'Giant' Kane Sesquicentennial parade is slated today

The Kane Sesquicentennial celebration this week has drawn large crowds for various entertaining events.
But this great attendance doesn't compare with the huge turnout expected today for the "giant" 70-unit parade.
Beginning at 1 p.m. today, the parade will line up near the Central Towers on Greeves Street.

Opening ceremony is held for Kane Sesquicentennial

Mother Nature is smiling on Kane.
Skies brightened just in time Thursday for the opening ceremony for the Kane Sesquicentennial celebration.
The 45-minute ceremony on Field Street at Fraley Street featured the crowning of Miss Sesquicentennial Delaney Oertly, Junior Miss Sesquicentennial Lily Deane, Prince Jacob Menteer and Princess Madyson Wilson.
Other awards also were presented at the ceremony.
Brittany Collin and Shane Stevens are the parents of 5-month-old Swayze, the winner of the Baby Contest.

Opening ceremony is tonight for Kane Sesquicentennial

The week-long Kane Sesquicentennial celebration moves into full swing tonight with the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Field Street.
Sue Holt, chairman of the Sesquicentennial Committee, will be one of the speakers at the ceremony.
The program will feature an original Ted Johnson song about Kane.
The Shade Tree Commission also will be dedicating the 150th new tree to be planted for the Sesquicentennial.
