New Kane postmaster begins work on ‘busiest day’

Jumping right into the fire.
That’s what it felt like for Beth Obenreder, who started work as the new Kane postmaster Monday—considered the “busiest day” of the year for any post office in the U.S. due to the Christmas rush.
Obenreder weighed packages and sold Christmas card stamps as customers stood in line at the Kane Post Office to send their cherished pre-holiday mail to family members across the country.
“We take our jobs seriously,” Obenreder said. “We want to make sure the mail gets where it’s supposed to go.”

3rd Annual Nikky’s Dance Studio show upcoming

Are you ready to get into the Christmas spirit? If so… don’t miss the 3rd Annual Nikky’s Dance Studio Competition Team Christmas show. The Christmas performance is set for this Saturday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Kane High School. The show titled “Oh Santa!” will showcase the competition team’s many talents; including ballet, tap, lyrical, jazz and acrobatics for the whole family.

Lantz Corners sewer hookups awaiting receipt of loan

HAZEL HURST—Once a loan agreement is finalized with PNC bank, connections are expected to be authorized for customers in the Lantz Corners Sewer District.
Hamlin Township plans to borrow $105,000 from PNC to make its payment of $104,000 to the Mt. Jewett Regional Sewer Authority. Under a long-standing agreement, the payment is required before the sewer connections are made.
The loan is expected to be finalized Friday, according to talks last week at the meeting of the Hamlin Township Board of Supervisors.

But there's little holiday joy in the life of Matthew Prosser of Kane. He's loaded with inoperable tumors due to a genetic disease known as neurofibromatosis.

Business manager might serve as interim school chief

Steve Perry, the longtime business manager for the Kane School District, might be picked to serve as the interim school superintendent.
The school board reportedly will act Tuesday to name an interim school chief. Dr. Maryann Anderson, the school superintendent, is retiring Dec. 31.
The school board has scheduled a special meeting for 6 p.m. Tuesday in the library at the Kane Middle School. The meeting is open to the public.

Hale-Berry civil case is now set for Tuesday

BRADFORD – A civil case involving Mt. Jewett Police Chief Steve Hale and Mt. Jewett Councilwoman Linda Berry and her husband, Robert, now is scheduled to be heard Tuesday morning.
Bradford District Court Judge Dominic A. Cercone Jr. has been assigned to hear the case, which is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday in his courtroom. The proceedings are open to the public.
According to court documents, Hale is suing the Berrys for $12,000 in damages.
Hale claims in his civil suit that the house he purchased last year from the Berrys had pre-existing furnace problems.

911 Center implements Medical Priority System

SMETHPORT— The McKean County 911 Center has announced the implementation of the Medical Priority Dispatch System to better serve the citizens of McKean County in emergency situations.
The new system allows dispatchers to accurately assess each emergency call and identify life-threatening situations by automatically prompting dispatchers to ask a list of questions. When each question is answered, the system will then direct them to another question depending on the response, according to 911 Director Andrew Johnson.

'A Christmas Carol' opens tonight at Chapel

"A Christmas Carol"-- a one-man play by Brandon Meeks of Kane-- opens tonight at 8 p.m. at the Kane Memorial Chapel on Chestnut Street.
It will be the first of three performances featuring a trained actor, who has appeared in numerous plays.
He adapted his one-man play from the classic "A Christmas Carol" by author Charles Dickens. 
In the 90-minute play, Meeks portrays over 25 characters-- including Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, the ghosts of Jacob Marley, Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future and, of course, Scrooge.

Red Cross Blood Drive just misses its goal

The Red Cross Blood Drive held Monday in Kane just missed its goal for the visit.
The goal for the Red Cross Blood Drive at the First United Methodist Church was 44 units. A total of 43 units were donated.
A total of 48 area residents showed up to donate blood. However, five would-be donors were deferred for health reasons.
There were three first-time Blood Drive donors. They include Dennis DeMarte and Dan Koza of Kane and Jordan Barnard of Port Allegany.
